Oh yeah? "Spelt" is not a word. "Spelled" is the term you're looking for. Take that, forums poster "Cow-Boy_Be-Bop".

Kind of wish I'd chimed in earlier, but here goes.

How did we get a list of the worst anime without Hanaukyo Maid Team?

Seriously folks. Now, I'm an open and unabashed harem anime fan. I have Tenchi OAV cels and Ai Yori Aoshi posters and am striving to continue collecting Oh! My Goddess in the flipped oversized Dark Horse release because damnit I've already got 7 volumes like that and I don't want a weird looking shelf.

However, this show went beyond harem. I mean, honestly, we're talking about a show where an army of vaguely lolita-style maids distinguishable only by height and hair color have an absolute orgasm any time they can employ unnecessarily complicated methods to perform a task their unwilling underaged "master" doesn't really want them to do, anyway.

And on top of all that, no full-frontal.

You see, any romantic comedy (be it the angsty shoujo type or the ecchi shonen type) finds its core strength in the quality of its characters. 801TTS Airbats, Saber Marionette, Love Hina, these have all faded while Oh! My Goddess, Tenchi Muyo!, Kimagure Orange Road, Urasei Yatsura, and Ranma 1/2 continue on.

This comes down to quality, memorable, distinct characters. If a series in the genre can't give us that. Well then damnit give us the porn!

Aside from the fact I've barely been watching any anime, I can still tell you that right now the two big magical girl anime in Japan are Kirarin Revolution and Yes! PreCure 5. This is based on their popularity with the little girls that those series are really made for. Not the otaku-aimed moe-style magical girl shows. The ones like Sailor Moon that little 5 year olds were really dressing up as and buying toys for 15 years ago.

The newest form of Pretty Cure, as mentioned in the article, is Yes! PreCure 5. It has the same five member team in different colors with transformation sequences (I assume, I haven't seen it!) that Sailor Moon had. I haven't seen it, but it's everywhere here. It's the current reigning girl's anime. When I see anime merchandise, while the long-time staples of Doraemon and Anpan-man abound, the little girls are all over Yes! PreCure 5 and the little boys are all over Pokemon. Yes, still.

Then there's Kirarin Revolution straggling behind. It's not quite a magical girl series, but it's got a little girl as a singing idol with a rival and love interest, cute mascot characters, etc. There's merchandise and games for it all over the place.
It also has tie-ins with real life singing idols from Morning Musume and the like. While groups like that still have their fanbases mostly littered with older males, it's bringing in little girls into the fray. I was at the Hello! Project museum a couple of months ago in Shibuya, and saw a little girl with her mom there. A video that was the new ending theme for Kirarin Revolution came on the screen in back of the store, and the little girl started singing and doing the dance and everything. It was super cute.

I think there just might be no single better question for determining an anime fan's level of kung fu than "what's the worst anime you've ever seen and why?" If the worst thing you've ever seen is something like Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam Wing/SEED, Neon Genesis Evangelion, or anything else that aired on Cartoon Network (even if it's as bad as Trinity Blood!)...then you just plain don't know what suffering truly is.

I definitely agree with this. I think one of those titles would be a better answer to the question, "What is the worst popular anime you've seen?" or "What is the most overrated anime you've seen?". But absolute worst? You named a few titles I don't even particularly like, but that doesn't make them the worst anime out there. I appreciate their merits and what they tried to do. I have seen so many anime over the years and so many with just horrible characters, story, production... It makes my least favorite popular anime look amazing compared to those. I mean, they have giant fanbases for a reason. Many pisspoor anime out there do not, at all.

People make mistakes all the time, whether or not they're grammar freaks. Heh... I would know. Wink

Is "ain't" in the dictionary? Yes. Therefore, the dictionary is wrong.

The dictionary is made from written works, not spawned in a laboratory. Imagine a couple thousand monkeys with index cards and reference material and you pretty much have an idea of how webster's dictionary is made. Don't see how anything in it can be wrong when all it does is define a word people all over the country use. Ain't that the truth.

Because my definition of a dictionary is one that contains real words. Although I do see your point. Neutral

One word: Vampirates

I thought it was going to make me millions, then I find out that someone else came up with the idea (same name, ever) several years before I did.

I can understand someone else coming along and thinking up "pirate vampires" or "vampire pirates" or whatever else... But, COME ON!? "VAMPIRATES"!?

Totally unfair. But a nice example of your statement.

You don't happen to write a certain webcomic by that name do you?

As for Manga vs. Anime
I have to go with manga. Like someone said- manga is cheaper.
Besides that, you normally get every detail of what the author is trying to get across- but in anime some scences are left out.

(speaking on manga to anime type productions and not anime to manga.)

This is late in the whole nanoha thing but I thought it was a pretty clever way of explaining nanoha to those who haven't seen it. I saw this equation from a certain group of people and thought it summed it up pretty good:

(Shounen - never ending series - mind battles) X (Mahou Shoujo + Storyline + SUPER ENGRISH) = Nanoha

There was a picture with each definition which added the coolness factor but, meh.

I gotta speak up for Anime here.

I would say that Anime is absolutely superior in that it is absolutely preferable to actually watch something. Its fully animated with actual voices and music. Its my opinion that if far far better than reading it.

The downsides are that Anime is more expensive to produce, more expensive to buy, you need a TV/etc to watch it, etc.

I think if you want to look at it including factors such those, perhaps Manga is superior. It really varys depending on the individual's situation. However, to me looking at it like that seems kinda like saying Hotdogs are better than Steak because you can get em for cheaper. Sure hotdogs might be the best choice a lot of the time since you cant afford to get steak or want something quicker or easier. That doesn't really make em better though.

Ofcourse, Im talking about them as a medium here. Comparing specific Anime to their Manga counterparts is a whole other discussion.

Yeah, from an artistic standpoint, anime obviously has the edge; good voice acting, atmospheric music and smooth animation can bring shows to life and get the viewers drawn in to the story.

...Provided the VA's are doing a good job, the music isappropiate and atmospheric, and the animation is halfway decent.

Put simply, anime done well is far better IMO. But there are so many things that could potentially screw it up, while great manga simply requires consistent artwork and good storytelling.

So looking at individual examples, I call anime. Overall, I call manga.

The only magical girl show I've seen is Puni Puni Poemy, if that counts. I damn near busted my gut laughing at that show! Laughing
