Now for my two cents:
To cover an area that hasn't been discussed yet. Movie Theaters. As we know the Movie industry has its rating system and it is supposed to be enforced by the cashiers and ushers as well as other employees at the cinema. In order to purchase an R-rated movie ticket an ID is required. For PG 13's if the child is obviously too young and has no parent the ticket isn't sold. At least that is my theaters policy. Now... Why can't libraries have some sort of system like that? Everyone here has been making extremely valid points.

My next rant:
As a Christian Otaku, I find that much of the anime/manga/otaku culture is in fact problematic, however when I read mangas like Love Hina, Ai Yori Aoshi, and Saikano, I see that they offer more morality (in reference to finding one's one true love) than anything America's Hollywood offers. We have American Pie and MTV, that promote sex and more. If anything I believe that the Anime and Manga I read have much better messages to them than Hollywood and its "horndog" aproach to sex and relationships.

Bottom line, anime and manga need to be taken in context and cannot be viewed as cartoons due to the American "Disney" mentallity that because it is a comic or drawing it is for kids.

I love how they say Peach Girl is "about" a girl drugged and set up to be raped. Um, right. That's the entire plot for all 18 volumes. Mmhmm. ~_~

Well, I guess the mother hasn't been reading the book in the young adults section. In that section, there are books about sex, rape, violence, etc... In perfect detail. Just because it's graphical doesn't mean the other books don't have it. Cause all the YA books do. Well most.

I hope the manga doesn't get banned in those libraries. Evil or Very Mad

I wonder if her mother let's her read the Old Testament in the Bible? Or is it too racy for her and her Sunday school classes. Shocked Incest, rape, carnal knowledge, and murder are some of the issues touched upon in the "Good Book" and many parents don't "bat an eye" at letting their children read it cover to cover. In fact, many insist on it!

One must understand that most issue-oriented and adult-themed manga and anime was never intended for children in the first place, but for the more mature audience. It is one of the many media outlets (besides the soaps and prime-time dramas) to touch on these issues. Slipping these issues (date rape, incest, murder, etc.) into media formats is the only way to enlighten the masses on these issues now days. You see them all the time you switch on the TV and sit down to watch your favorite shows. People expect to be entertained and not to have an issue preached to them, but these seem about the only way to get the issue out.

Lone Wolf and Cub will not make it's home on the young adult shelf but there is now way I can say to little Johnny he can't take that out when he comes up to the desk.

Exactly. However, if the librarian knows the content of the title, perhaps (s)he should just inform Johnny that it may not be the best choice for him and then, if Johnny still wants it, to leave it at that and check it out for him. That way, the librarian isn't preventing Johnny from getting a book but is still warning him about its contents, which may prompt Johnny to reconsider his choice (or, possibly, decide that he simply must have it).

I know I had something else I was going to say, but I can't remember it anymore.

Very much agreed. Hopefully Hilary Clinton doesn't get her feathers ruffled for this one, because you know how she's trying to ban violent video games. *laughs* That's like, impossible.

I agree, the mother needs to
read it first and get learn more
about manga/anime before
saying something stuipd like that.
People like that upsets me.
They need to learn more
about anime, manga and
Japanese culture.

<3 I've been waiting for this. I saw this coming EONS ago. The only things you've seen in the news so far is "Manga helps kids read!"...<3 I've just been waiting for them to realize what's in it. Not like I want them to start banning manga (oh hell no), but I just thought it'd be funny when parents figured out.

I read Marmalade Boy when I was 11 as my first manga. I turned out perfectly fine. Peach Girl is probably too much for an 11-year old, but Marmalade Boy should be fine.

Manga will probably take its hits for a while, but it'll pass. A few decades ago comic books (not manga, US comic books, superman and the like) were accused of corrupting childrens' minds; then later it was Rock n Roll, then rap music, now videogames... probably shouldn't be TOO surprising if it transitions into manga and anime, too.

I agree parents shouldn't exactly complain if ratings are on the back, howeve, it does indeed introduce the below "Teen" rating to socially concerning topics rather than witness it firsthand.

This is why we need to make a political interest group who will represent the fans when the time comes.

Manga, Anime and Doujinshi are on borrowed time before one jerk parent, lawmaker or DoJ official decides to make it their mission to destroy it "for the sake of the children".

To me, this seems like a very clear case of bad parenting. The woman is obviously a reactionary imbecile who took no time to try to understand what it was her child was reading and judging it after thorough review. People shouldn't be having children if they expect everyone else to do the work for them.

My parents knew that I was reading Stephen King's "The Stand" when I was in sixth grade. Other parents need to lighten up.

Seems like very responsible parenting to me: the parents aren't holding the daughter's hand and do give her some degree of freedom of choice as to what she reads but they are still taking an active interest in what she chooses to read, and, if they discover some content that they find objectionable, they're perfectly correct to let other parents know about it.

I know some people will ask, "Well, if they're so responsible, why is the daughter in the young adults section?", but, at many libraries, the "Young Adults" section is pretty much everything aimed at younger readers that isn't a 32-page picture storybook (i.e. any kind of prose novels). I was reading some stuff out of the young adults section when I was 4 or 5 years younger than that.

If they were negligent parents, the daughter probably wouldn't be at the library in the first place.
