As an American with little to no knowledge of Japanese political and social goings-on, there are certain moments of 'art imitating (regional) life' on a show that I suppose I don't pick up on like someone more familiar with Japan's current events would. I mean, there are definitely some universal references in shows that almost anyone from anywhere can understand, but I feel like there is a lot more going on between the lines that someone like me would fail to catch.
Eden of the East comes to mind as being a show that, at times, seemed to have a lot more Japan-centric political symbolism to it than I could decipher. But there are definitely plenty more that I've seen where I felt something was trying to be connected to a political or social statement of some kind... Anyway, are there any regional topics in particular that are commonly used as underlying symbolism in anime? |
