When they talk about reality, since your "sentience" is in the game (partialy at least) why can't it be conciderd a different reality even though it is in a game.

Hm.. I would say yes, The World could easily be considered "another reality" of sorts. In my opinion, reality is only what your brain is perceiving, and by having your conscience somewhat integrated into the experiences and actions of The World, it can appear just as real, though I think the creators of the game probably created a kind of safegaurd to protect the players from feeling all of it 100% (then of course there's the Morganna thing and what she did to Tsukasa).
The first movie? Yes, I've seen it once, but it was about 6 or 7 years ago and I don't remember much. |

This thread is a little funny... And not good funny.
Dot Hack is a little boring... I fell asleep watching it once. Maybe because instead of using all- vibrant characters like other anime out there do, like Slayers and Shaman King do, it has people who mumble like Tsukasa and other characters on the show who don't talk at all! BTW As long as I'm here I'd like to say I'm back from the dead guys! And this time for good! |

The conchious withdrawlel system was oply ment to remove some os your sence and leave your higher brain functions intact.
But in tsucasa's case the system compleaty downloaded her mind similar to the theorys of SCRATCH from cowboy bebop and since his mind became data I thinck that her origenal mind was deleted and as soon as she started to live the game she had her sentence changed into digital information and did die and come back with a new mind spawend by the stored information so as bear said not the original but just as good. |

Ah~ great analysis. You just answered several plot details in addition to making an excellent reference, which I guess could also explain Tsukasa's slight "change of character" at the end from a whiny Shinji-like character to a not-so-bad person who doesn't constantly become self-absorbed in their own problems to do anything productive or worthwhile for himself or anyone else (a la everyone in Evangelion  ).

I have to say I didn't see Tsukasa that way. I think her tragedy was that she was a very good girl who was totally warped by the fact that spoiler[her monster of a father verbally abused her, beat the heck out of her and for all we know maybe even worse]. That's why she particularly avoided the adult men like the plague at first and she gravitated towards Mimiru, who considering her life experience was the least threatening person she ran into early on. It's also why she was vulnerable to being trapped in the first place. A person whose life was so bad she had no reason to want to go back to the real world was an obvious target - much less resistance there. I think the Tsukasa we see in the second half of the series is her real self and the child she would have been if she had had a normal life (at least I like to hope what she went through isn't normal...).

I was under the impression that Tsukasa was male, not female. Reality is what the brain perceives by the signals received from the senses. A glowing candle looks hot, feels hot, therefore is hot. Tsukasa could feel physical pain in "The World" so to him it was real.

Yes, Tsukasa is a boy in The World. spoiler[But in the real world, "he" is the comatose girl in the hospital, which is suspected early on and confirmed in the final minutes of the series.] So I guess either address is correct, depending on which reality you personally consider prominent in your own perception of the story
 .
