Hello,

Many of you read or participated in the discussions about the possible recent use of Public Law 108-21.
To paraphrase, it has the possibilty of making a large number of current licensed anime, manga and doujinshi titles into a form of illegal visual material.

Depending on the use of this law, it may affect which animes, manga and doujinshi will be brought over into the U.S. in the future (it may even affect the legality of the titles that we currently own)

I am currently in the process of creating a special interest group that will advocate the preservation of the current Japanese cultural interchange that we enjoy. This group will hope to engage the fans, artists, anime and manga companies and the general public on the importance of preserving these wonderful art forms in the U.S.

In any case, first things first...a name!
Please let me know which name (or acronym) sounds the best. If you have other ideas, please let me know. Thank you.

p.s. although I am still trying to get things going (concrete mission statement, purpose and intended activities), if you are interested in helping create this new organization, please let me know!

Why not we've done everything else. lol. Very Happy

Anyways, out of the names you listed I would go with ACIA. As it is close to CIA which should give a little more of an offirmative and legal look to it. As opposed to JMCA and AMCA where I am constently thinking of YMCA, which in my opinion you might not want that look and people thinking that.

... okay, I hate to say this but America doesn't really have the right to ban anime. Confused It, by far, has to be the least of their concerns.

You do realize that America has a trade embargo on Cuba right now, not just an industry but an entire country right? America can "ban" whatever type of anime it deems inappropriate, but that is not the point. From what I briefly saw of the article it has to do child pornography aka, lolicon and such. If it did, in some way affect anime, it would probably be on hentai titles with the exploitation of "children" in them. Though I would imagine that this whole law primarily has to do with protecting real children and or new types of punishments for sex offenders and such. From what I saw it is not directed at anime in any way, hell I couldn't even find the words anime, images, or art in the entire thing. Seems like the possibility of this affecting anime is being blown out of proportion, it’s just too small of an industry to even garner their attention.

I hated having to do that but it was in reference to where ever the quote below came from.

In any case, I'm very serious about helping start off an organization that will promote, protect and encourage tolerance for the Japanese arts forms we all love.

The actual word 'anime' was stated in the official DOJ conviction release:
http://www.usdoj.gov:80/usao/vae/ArchivePress/DecemberPDFArchive/05/20051201WhorleyNP.pdf

It's actually a bit scary to read.

In anycase, I wouldn't defend that guy with a 10 foot pole. He had a VERY long rapsheet of very real offenses but he seemed to be put away for about 1000 years for possesion of essentially the same doujinshi art found at most of your conventions.

In any case, there are many licensed, legitimate anime and manga that could be in danger such as Kite Special Edition, Gantz, Utena, Chobits, Steel Angel Kurumi, Please Teacher, etc.

Yup, so even if it DID affect anime, it'd be targeted at anime that most anime fans (including myself) would love to disown from the super-genre in the first place (like lolicon hentai).

So? If that's what he downloaded then that's what he downloaded. Anime is a broad term. It would be like them saying someone made a "movie" of child porn and someone being all concerned because they said "movie". Certainly anime was not the word most of us would have referred to it as, but it's the DOJ we're talking about. They aren't going to dig to get "proper" terms.

Like I said before, this law was used on someone with a prior child porn conviction, who had also, during the same time he was getting his hentai, also got real pictures of real children engaging in sexual acts. Not too hard to see why that would slap as much as they can on him. Now, when you hear about Joe Blow down the street being arrested as he walked out of an anime store with a hentai, then you should start to get worried.

Some anime and most hentai is probably at risk of becoming a target. It's all just a matter of time before folks like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson are all over this. You may think these guys are completely nuts, but the folks currently in the whitehouse take these guys seriously, as does much of the domestic news media.

Japanese anime and manga then to be made to have mass audience appeal, so many of our favorite anime is bound to have even a few seconds of this kind of thing. It's a cultural norm for Japanese entertainment.

Even if fans of normal titles are not prosecuted, this current situation may make U.S. anime companies start thinking twice and shying away from many titles they would usually import in a hearbeat.

So many of the favorite series out there shows at least a few seconds of underage sex (as I already pointed out, nudity has nothing to do with it), which would also fail the SLAPS test, specifically that the work, taken as a whole lacks serious artistic value? I don't think so. If your favorite title is Family of Debauchery maybe.
