I've been recommended a lot of anime, and a lot of it I liked. Peace Maker Kurogane was recommended to me recently and I was told it was fairly historical and action-oriented. This seems interesting to me, but one thing I'm having trouble with is if it's an exceptionally good show or not. I've heard little to nothing about the show since it was recommended, and just wanted to hear a few opinions on it. Is it worth a purchase? Or at least a viewing?

There was another thread on PMK a little bit back. I think the main consensus was that it wasn't too great, and that you kind of needed to read the manga to really appreciate it. Personally, I didn't like it very much. If you're looking for action, this is not the anime to watch. 95% of the story line revolves around a young boy who just wants to join the Shinsengumi, but he doesn't even become a real warrior until the very last episode. Aside from that, he isn't involved in any real battles at all. At the very end (as in, last 15 minutes of the entire series), I thought "hey this could make a good anime if they started from here." The animation is fine and the character designs are pretty cool, but if you're looking for something along the lines of Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai Champloo, it's not the same action-packed stuff. That's just my take on it.

While I haven't seen Peacemaker, I have seen Samurai Deeper Kyo. I really enjoyed it. For me, there was very good action and very good character development or at least understanding. I really liked all of the characters that you were supposed to like, hated the characters you were supposed to hate and felt sympathy for those Blah, blah, blah.
Regardless, I liked it.

Peace Maker has major pacing issues; it's one series that could be cut down into a single movie-length film and not lose much of anything.
