A while back I was trying to identify an anime by a picture, and I thought to myself, "Self, wouldn't it be great if there were a website where you could search for an anime or character by its/his/her visual characteristics (such as hair/eye color, hairstyle, etc.)?"
For example, if I had a picture of Ed Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, I'd enter something along the lines of {male, blonde, braid} and get a list of characters who looked like that. Does anything like that exist that I just haven't found yet? If not, is anyone besides me interested in the idea? I'm curious about the possibility of creating such a site if none exists. ~trlblzr |

Although it's a really neat idea... I don't know if you comprehend the logistics of such a project. You'd need people to go in and manually input all the different visual characteristics of every character in thousands of shows. It obviously wouldn't be particularly useful if you only had 4-5 different parameters and each new characteristic is tens of thousands of additional entries needed. In addition to all the time it would take to input everything, there's many other problems: characters change clothes, sometimes hairstyles, hell, sometimes they even change gender.
The biggest problem even more important than the logistics is your aim in doing so. It seems like the sole purpose for this would be to identify which anime a character you saw in a picture is from. Not worth the effort when the human mind already does those things for you  If you don't know the answer, someone around you probably does

That's all very true. It would be very difficult, nearly impossible even, but I'm of the opinion that difficulty is no reason not to try.
As for my motive, that's why I'm asking what other people think. Obviously it's not worth doing just for me, but if lots of people would find it useful it may be more beneficial. Then again, it might just be a giant waste of time! Who knows? ~trlblzr |

It would be easier to ask in the specified thread in the forum than making an entire new sub-database for that purpose. The effort will be too great for, in my opinion, not much improvement.

Well, there's an anime image gallery (that I won't link to as it has everything from standard cute stuff all the way to extreme hentai and real pr0n) which uses a tagging system that lets you add attributes like blueyes, pinkhair, blonde, longhair, twintails etc., however it relies on someone having added those particular tags to the image along with the character name and/or series.

I mean like you said, "I'd enter something along the lines of {male, blonde, braid} and get a list of characters who looked like that." THere are alot of characters of male, blonde, braid....... Plus sometimes is hard, because you are trying to mean to be exactly like google....I still have problems of finding pics there....... |

Jeez, sandy_taty what's with the triple post. I've seen you respond on a couple other threads and there mostly double posts. Just click submit once.
As for the suggestion at hand, I agree that it would be very difficult to do. I think that it would be slightly useful in some cases but I doubt someone will want to put so much time and effort into something that'll barely get used. But hey, if you can do it then I say do it. Thanks, ~Newcomer~ |

But seriously, trying to make an anime/manga character database will take years on end to even impliment 50 percent of all anime/manga characters out there. There's just too many. Although you could try. |
