Thanks, this is a much better start. But you may want to fix your My Anime link. It actually makes me go to my My Anime list instead. Read this post for some help. Keep up the good work

If you want an anime with a "hopeless" feel to it that has to do with war, I can't think anything better than SaiKano. Although, I have to say that this anime is a bit different from any of the other ones you've watched. Romance is the main theme of it. But you said you're open to other genres, so if you want to try something a bit different than what you've seen, I highly recommend. Actually, I highly recommend it period. This is a very depressing anime though, so just be warned. More depressing than any of the other anime you've watched that I've seen (haven't seen Barefoot Gen, Appleseed, Animatrix, or Hellsing... guess that's means only two of them actually ).

The very second I decide I want to recommend Saikano and revisit this thread, I find that it's already been recommended...30 seconds ago. |

Well, sort of sci-fi style wars that get hopeless are abundant I'm sure, but the ones I'd recommend are as follows:
Samurai 7 they put a neo-futuristic twist to the classic Seven Samurai film. There's samurai dueling and samurai taking on giant machines. Defending a village against an army of machine samurai while completely outnumbered, it's quite intense. And spoiler[though the battle against the Nobuseri ends after episode 16, the series turns to where the Capital (central city of this world where the emporer derives) descends on the same village and is about to destroy it using more giant machines.] The trailer for volume 7 looks like it would be right down your alley as it depicts a large scale battle against giant sword-wielding machines while the main samurai have only their own swords and only their human bodies, so its kind of on par with the Matrix as in humans are fighting off advanced machines for survival. Banner of the Stars but I must warn you first off, if you do want to check this series out, you should check out Crest of the Stars first since BotS is the sequel to it. Banner of the Stars has quite a lot of interstellar/galactic warfare. Very well done and intense space battles throughout this peice. And there are quite a few scenes where I found myself thinking "now, how in the hell are they going to get out of this one?" And the characterization they give to the main cast just add to the intensity as it makes those scenes heart-wrenching to an extent as I grew attached to them (watching Crest of the Stars adds to this feeling as well). The Venus Wars this is an older one, one of the first peices I saw in the anime world, but I'd still have to recommend it for war-lovers (being one myself and all Gundam Wing the whole 49 episodes focuses on an interstellar war between earth and the space colonies. There are countless battles on land, sky, space, and even under water with giant mechs. I'm not that fond of mechs at all, but this was the first mecha I got into, so its cool. Again, there are scenes that had me thinking "How will they survive this?" and its just great sci-fi battles all throughout. But I must warn you of very slow moving parts as well as annoying or bland voice acting that appears throughout it as well (in the english dub that is), but its worth checking out. Well, those are my recommendations, hope you enjoy at least some of these. |

I will second the Venus Wars reccomendation- it's a pretty good movie, plus it's old/obscure enough you should be able to find it cheap.

i am pretty sure that most of the Gundam series are about war, the only one that i know isn't is G Gundam.
also,
what about Grave of the Fireflies. it is related to war and has that hopeless felling of depression. |

Yes, but it's not technically a "war film" as there isn't much battles or action in it. Although it isn't an anime, (currently a manga) 20th Century Boys has some war scenes and implications. An amazing series as well. Last edited by excel958 on Wed Jul 19, 2006 6:19 am; edited 1 time in total |

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu : If you want an "historic" war anime and one of the best Space Opera ever made, watch this one.
You'll see society problems and strategic battles like in a real war. Crest/Banner of the stars is good too... |

I regard The Cockpit and Area 88 OVA as among the best for anime that feature war.

I'm going to third the vote for Saikano. I'm stuck watching it, I've kind of gotten to the point where I just don't want to watch such a depressing show any more; but I'm also the kind of person who hates leaving things unfinished, so I can't stand to not finish it
I've seen a lot of depressing shows as I like them too, but this one almost seemed OVERLY depressing. Yet another first for me, I got that "wow, I think part of me just died inside" after only the first episode |

Now and Then, Here and There is an outstanding war TV series. Outstanding animation, music, story, where it's set in a world where water is gold. A mad man rules the world in his mechinal castle, using children they kidnapped as his army.
peace out from the german/asian dude. |
