I would say I'm surprised the HXH merchandise machine has taken one of the biggest "Something Went Wrong" moments of the series and turned it into yet another financial boon. Yet, this is the same country that turned EVANGELION into a veritable cash cow. So, not very surprised.
I also wish this doesn't de-fang Togashi's intent with this transformation and what it means for the story. But that's like asking the Sun not to rise.

Evangelion was destined to be a cash cow from day 1, it is an Otaku Anime after all. This however is kind of surprising since it more mainstream and probably gets a lot of revenue from TV ratings.

IIRC Hunter x Hunter had to move to a late-night spot around the time the Chimera Ant arc began (or maybe even earlier?), so I'm not sure how much money it's been bringing in based on ratings.
