Alright, so I'm doing this project for my tenth grade moderation and its regarding the effect of animation on people.
So, as one of the first stages, I'd love to know what you guys yourself think! Give me your take on the case, generally speaking, how do you think watching anime/cartoons and the entire otaku/fanboy culture that it carries affects us?
I think I'm being a little vague, so I've made a few questions. I'd appreciate all the replies I get.
- What is it about anime/cartoons, animated entertainment in general that appeals to you?
- Do you think the purpose of viewing these shows/movies are restricted to entertainment, relief, passing time, etc?
- Does the media have an effect on you're attitude, or perspective on certain things? For example school life/work/family/friends/society
- Do they leave a cultural or social impact? What kind?
- Has it become an obsession, or is it still just recreation?
- Has it affected you into being reclusive or outgoing?
- At the end of the day, what is the significance of animated entertainment in your life, what does it mean to you?
Thanks in advance!

For one, the physics. In no other medium is it possible to get away with half the stunts pulled off in animation. Were they to attempt many of the things they do in animation in a live-action film...well, it wouldn't work so well. As for anime specifically, I don't really have any very logical reasons. Perhaps it's because I enjoy the smoothness and flow of the Japanese language in general and therefore prefer seiyuu over American voice acting, but then again, I'm very tolerant of dubbed anime as well, so I don't think that would suffice as an actual reason.

Other than a select few philosophical/touching/psychological series, yes, I believe so. I can't imagine how in the world harem or tsuyoku naritai type series (which constitute much of the anime selection) could be anything more than entertainment...

No, not really. I'm sure it affects some people, though, and with some of the absolutely stellar titles out there, I can imagine how it would.

In Japan, possibly, but in the U.S. I don't think it's well-known enough to have any impact on anything whatsoever.

Recreation.
| Quote: | | - Has it affected you into being reclusive or outgoing? |
Nope.

Haven't a clue.
NOTE: In answering your questions, I only limited my answers to Japanese animation only, as I am somewhat unclear about other types of media (American cartoons included) and seeing how this is a forum for discussion of anime. Also, I would suggest that you conduct a questionnaire for a school assignment in a place elsewhere than a forum for anime discussion. For starters, in real life...

Firstly, thanks for the reply, and I will gladly address your concern.
I have infact started my survey in real life and that is essentialy my most detailed collection of data, but since this
assignment is of a more important and wholistic nature, I require more diverse demographics. Consequently I have posted my questionaire, quite delibrately in an anime forum as well as other forums of other respective medias of animation in an attempt to encompass all the niches of my subject.

The genres allow for much more freedom than if it was a live action thing. being animated saves money on all the special effects that would be needed to acheive the same effect in a live action movie

this should be generally left to the discretion of the individual who is asked. i view it as many different ones, entertainment, relief etc.

only in the sense that i can seperate myself from others who do not share my interest or knowledge on the subject
| Quote: | | - Do they leave a cultural or social impact? What kind? |
by finding others who follow/like the same anime/other form of entertainment, i can gain their friendship through it in a club or something similar. culturally, only if i went to japan. although i have tried more japanese things then i may have normally

only time will tell.
| Quote: | | - Has it affected you into being reclusive or outgoing? |
in genneral, no. i have always been the same person i am today. the only difference is that i have more people to talk to through the anime.
| Quote: | | - At the end of the day, what is the significance of animated entertainment in your life, what does it mean to you? |
it is a means of entertainment, and sometimes escape. if something sad happens in my life, i sometimes watch and anime/read a manga/someting else that i know will make me laugh. i can lose myself in the moment and forget about my problems for even a little bit. when its over, i have a better perspective on what hadf happened and can see what i can do about it and get on with life.
i hope this helps

To me it's like different styles in art. What do I like about watercolors? What do I like about oils? They're each unique in appearance and have their good qualities and bad qualities, it's all a matter of what I can appreciate in the style. I see animation as a style, which itself incorporates more styles. I mainly enjoy the artistic look of it and the unique settings it offers.

For me, yes, I don't rely on anime to guide me in life or teach me about the world around me. It may be capable at times but I find if I want that there's far better and more reliable means.
| Quote: | | - Does the media have an effect on you're attitude, or perspective on certain things? For example school life/work/family/friends/society |
No, it's fiction, and fiction simply isn't real so I see no reason I should allow it to impact reality. It gives me a little insight in to Japanese culture, but really I don't rely on that for my info on Japan any more than anyone should watch an episode of One Tree Hill or other basic domestic series and use it as a guide to our culture.
| Quote: | | - Do they leave a cultural or social impact? What kind? |
No, it's entertainment, not a guide or brochure. As stated above it's a minor insight to be taken as a basic look and not as a factual representation as it is simply fiction.
| Quote: | | - Has it become an obsession, or is it still just recreation? |
Recreation, I find obsessions to be unhealthy as it impacts your behaviour and closes your mind towards what else is out there.
| Quote: | | - Has it affected you into being reclusive or outgoing? |
It has had no impact on my social behaviour.
| Quote: | | - At the end of the day, what is the significance of animated entertainment in your life, what does it mean to you? |
It means I'm entertained in a style represented by an artform I truly appreciate and enjoy. I'm sure that is the goal of those who create it, aside from making money, so mission accomplished.
