This is really freaking cool. Now just imagine what they can do next with it:
At a restaurant, a 3D waiter/waitress can take your order, facing each customer in turn. Also at a restaurant, you can get a 3D preview of a dish before you order it. When this technology gets larger projections, you can have virtual strip dancers (no more tipping!). Also on a larger scale, virtual car show exhibits. Make a portable version, and you have avatars in the palm of your hand (Cortana anyone?) Damn cool indeed. |

Hm... maybe not... yet. I watched the vid with the interview. Looks like the projection is contained within the funnel device, which is below the table's surface level, and not actually projected "on top" of the table as it "appears" from their viewing angle. So while that wouldn't work for a virtual tour of something like a car, it'd still make for awesome entertainment possibilities. However, on a larger cale, you'd probably have to be farther away and seated stadium style to view it from an appropriate angle. Still, very cool.

To me, although of course the video is 2-d, it looks like the image is above the table, but only visible if the funnel is behind it from the viewer's point of view. In that respect, it resembles the "real image" that traditional optical devices can project. Yes, anything large to be viewed in the round like this would have to be in a pit, so the viewers would be looking down at the funnel. But the image would be above the surface, so it could appear to be interacting with, for example, live actors (if the glass is strong enough to support them).

This is kind of amazing...to be honest, my first thought was now, it might just be possible to make a real life Yu-gi-oh battle a possibility.
Of course I'm sure that's still a long way off...spoiler[pfft, like it's gonna happen.] |

It may not be perfect, but it works. That's the amazing thing. Scientists and engineers have been trying for a long time to create 3D projections in the round that were actually decent to watch, without glasses. Now that it does work it's just a matter of time before it can be marketed, and scaled up. I have no interest in the current versions of 3D TV, but I'd be interested in one of these. I might not be able to afford it, but I'd certainly be interested.

M.I.T. Labs had already done a crude recreation of the Princess Leia hologram from R2D2 in realtime using the Microsoft Kinect as the live video feed. |
