Oh, so no season 2 huh, must be a real bummer for some.
Wait...judging from the case of Sword Art Online and Accel World film, is this another movie that features "original" story? Dengeki Bunko sure loves "original movies" these days.
Interestingly enough, the movie proclaims that "Shiba Tatsuya will become a legend", for all the unthinkable achievements he had in season 1, I thought he is already jesu... I mean legend.

A film makes sense considering Madhouse and their recent works. I guess this turned out to be their "big announcement".

What's up with Dengeki Bunko series these days? If there's more anime it's either movie or OVA series.

The legend part is pretty much confirming they're adapting the Reminiscence arc which tells of how Tatsuya became so legendary. It's basically a flashback but important for fleshing out the characters especially Tatsuya.

i hope it's the flashback arc because that would make the bridge to a possible second season very easy

So volume eight of the light novel version, you mean?
I prefer the web version of that arc over LN version, much more brutal and impactful. Although the downside is the web version directly says China instead of "Great Asia Alliance", which constitutes such an awkward reading experience personally (well, I am a Chinese-native who speaks Japanese)
So thanks to Dengeki Bunko's editor, I guess?

A movie is a good way to gauge (and raise) market interest in the franchise. Possibly towards making a second season.

The interest in Japan is and was there for years before the anime even aired. So it´s not a matter of sales.

I expected a part 2, but eh, a film can do as well.

It is a very financially lucrative property, as you can see here and here. Though I side with Jacob Hope Chapman on this one (I'm not fond of it on a conceptual level alone) clearly a lot of people enjoyed it.

Not what I was expecting but I am just happy with more animated content for this series. Kinda hoping it's movie original with Tsutomu Satou writing the story like Oda has done with those godlike One Piece films.
