Given that Gran Turismo and Forza offer plentiful opportunities for the creation of virtual itasha nowadays, the progression to ita-hikoki (to coin a phrase) would not be an unexpected one.

I'm very happy with the Ace Combat Infinity style upgrade tree. I can't say for certain how effective it will be applying an online, microtransaction style upgrade tree to an offline game, but it definitely gave a distinct sense of progress that felt rewarding.
Also regarding the ita-planes. I believe it started in Ace Combat 6 with the idolm@ster tie ins, but the ita-fighters (my personal term) seemed to be most prevalent in Assault Horizon mainly because the skins were retained during the cutscenes:
