This looks like a by the numbers Isekai...in space! Was this someone's idea to shake up the genre? To do sci-fi instead of fantasy?

Well, this is by the same author as Trapped in a Dating Sim, which is both of those things at the same time.

That makes this the second isekai with a space setting announced this year with the other being, Reborn as a Space Mercenary.

Based on the trail, I might watch just to see how many references to other Sci-fi titles they pull off.

It's a refreshing angle. I've been drudging up the idea in discussions for a while now. Isekai has essentially conquered (more like drained) the fantasy realm, it's time to move skyward into new territory. I'd love to see a "John Carter of Mars" styled isekai, but I don't believe isekai authors have the chops for it.
The goal of most isekai is to just toss a bare bones framework out there as a vessel for a wish fulfilment story, and the fantasy setting is the lowest hanging fruit they can get. I'll just be happy we got this one and Reborn As A Space Mercenary and call it a win.
