You have these two series about witches, which outside of the main character could not be any more different.
Witch Watch is set in the modern world, has other non human magical species.Outside of a couple long story arcs, it is very episodic with stand alone stories, and it is more of a gag series. Witch Hat Atelier on the other hand is set in a fantasy world, and just about witches, it is very story driven. And I do think it is more serious and dramatic compared to Witch Watch which is more comedic. What they both have in common, it has the theme of found family, and the main characters are kind of similar. Last edited by zfunk on Tue Mar 18, 2025 4:21 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I would've narrowed it down to the animation studios, but both of them are pretty good. Although, I have to say with the production issues Bug Films had with Zom 100, I hope they don't run into the same problem with Atelier. Bibury has been consistently good with 100 Girlfriends and Grisaia this season, so that's something to look forward to for Watch.
So then I checked the voice cast. Atelier doesn't have anyone listed yet, so we'll just have to wait on that one. But Watch looks to have a really strong seiyuu lineup: Kaito Ishikawa in one of the main roles, with Jun Fukuyama, Rie Kugiyama, Kenta Miyake, and Hikaru Midorikawa in support. Personally, the Seinen demographic has me more curious for Atelier. But I also don't mind a good rom-com, so Watch could be fun, especially given Bibury's handling of 100 Girlfriends. Given that there's no casting info for Atelier, yet, I guess I'd go with Watch by default. |

First of all, thank you zfunk for starting this thread. I hadn't been aware of either show until your thread prompted me to start doing research so that I could answer your question and, in the course of said research, I discovered that I can watch the first three episodes of Witch Watch on the big screen tonight - woo hoo! Will defo take advantage of that opportunity.
In terms of which I am most looking forward to, my research suggests it may be an apples and oranges situation. They both seem to be offering a different kind of experience which makes it hard to compare. To tell you the truth, I'm looking forward to both of them. These days, I tend to lean more towards narrative driven shows as opposed to gag comedy, so that suggests I may enjoy Witch Hat Atelier more. On the other hand, Witch Watch is based on a manga by Kenta Shinohara, who created both Astra Lost in Space and Sket Dance. I enjoyed the anime adaptations of both, so that's a good sign. On the other, other hand, the Witch Hat Atelier manga seems to have won a lot of awards. The preview trailer shows that it's gonna look fantastic. So yeah, pumped for both, but might give the advantage to WHA. |

Well this is just an opinion, I do think a Witch Watch character and a Witch Hat Atelier character do have a similar look. At the very least I think the Witch Watch character in question the way she is designed looks like she could be from the Witch Hat Atelier world.
https://witch-watch.fandom.com/wiki/Aika_Watase https://witch-hat-atelier.fandom.com/wiki/Tetia Check for yourself at your own risk of being spoiled anime onlys. And Blood don't be mistaking, Witch Watch has epic story arcs at times. It is usually stand alone or two part stories, but when you least expect it, you can have an epic story arc just happen. |

So I'm back from watching the first three episodes of Watch Witch. I gotta say I wish I found it funnier. Don't get me wrong, I definitely had some chuckles and the occasional laugh but overall I can't say the comedy rocked my world. Ymmv. But Nico's adorable, Morihito is likeable and they are fun together. I'm sure I'll continue watching it when it starts up on Crunchyroll. But I do think I'll vibe more on WHA.

Maybe this is just me being dumb, but I kind of think that Witch Hat Atelier's hats look like dunce caps and I don't like that brimmed hats are associated with the villains
But it is a good manga, so I'm looking forward to the anime, anyway. |
