As an old dude, I'm naturally interested in an old dude doing something weird. Plus there was an anime a few years back, the name of which I cannot remember, but it got me interested in the whole Kamen Rider thing.

I still haven't watched trailers for all of the anime out there, but this is one of the ones that have caught my interest too. Looks distinct.

It looks fun but the big question is if the premise is meaty enough to avoid it feeling repetitive over time.

Yeah, I do not see this becoming repetitive. The first episode was equal measure cringe and awesome. The cringe comes with the transformation sequences yet when the punches get thrown shortly after you can not help but appreciate how cool it is. Then again, I cringe because it is make believe hero yet given the sheer power that Tanzaburo packs he can not be called a regular human (poor bear). Kamen Rider is fiction in the show yet becoming superhuman is seemingly possible so maybe heroes are real setting wise?
Anyway, I am in for watching more. |

Welp, as far my picks for this season have gone, A Gatherer's Isekai and Dusk Beyond the End of the World weren't bad but weren't everything I'd hoped they'd be. Sanda and this anime, however, were exactly what I'd hoped they'd be. I'm still not entirely sure if I'm watching a madman or a man of destiny here. I don't know if there's really a sci-fi element to this or if the guy can tap into some kind of hysterical strength like those stories of people who lift cars off their loved ones or PCP users. I don't know if this is more like the movie Unbreakable or Kickass or if I'm just not supposed to think about it too much.
But I sure did enjoy it. Here's hoping Chitose is in the Ramune Bottle and Gnosia are also as good as advertised. |

Episode 1
Hmmm. Yeah... I dunno. I kind of expected this one to just be balls out fun and it actually left me feeling... uncomfortable? I guess because my read on our MC is that he really is mentally damaged and not in a fun way. His obsession with Kamen Rider has had a hugely negative impact on his life. He's 40, unmarried, doesn't seem to have any friends and lives in a shitty apartment. He's wasted half of his life. Don't get me wrong, I liked this, it just wasn't quite what I was expecting. I think the woman we saw at the end might be bringing the fun, though. |

I get what you mean Blood. The mc wanting to be Kamen Rider is amusing but seeing the downside with him as a lonely 40 year old with nothing else to live for was not very cheerful. Him getting the chance to be Kamen Rider is a dream come true and I hope it also means getting some companions etc.

I get your point too, Blood, though that element of...sadness marinating in seediness? Pathos? I was expecting it from the trailer, though maybe not to this extent. If the weird adrenal stuff with his glowing heart is symbolic and isn't sci-fi, then him taking on the bear and leaping on top of a vending stand with one foot is absurd, and we're not supposed to take this completely seriously. If there is something strange going on, he's not necessarily cuckoo for coco puffs but might have a real calling. The fact that I'm still wondering which is which is one of the things I like about the show.

Another oogy part for me was when he started to cry after putting on the mask. To me, those tears did not seem to be tears of joy... there was something tortured about them that again made me feel uncomfortable. And of course this wasn't long after the reveal (I think) that his father had abandoned he and his mother when he was a boy after giving him a 4,000 yen guilt bribe.
Now the thing is, I suspect this show is going to do something far more interesting than I was initially expecting. The straight ahead balls out fun version of a middle-aged man indulging in his KR fantasies may have gotten a bit stale after a while. So I think I'm going to like this one a lot, just not in the way I originally assumed. |

Ummm...did what I think happened at the end of the episode really happen?
The addition of Tackle to the anime did indeed bring a bit of voom to the show, at least in this humble watcher's opinion. Her childhood obsession seems just as psychologically questionable as the male lead's, but the idea of watching their obsessions clash and comingle looks fun. I just hope the death of Tackle's TV inspiration isn't foreshadowing. I'm still wondering if our leads aren't slightly deranged because of some mystical calling or energy floating around in the collective unconscious called Kamen Rider. Tackle's strength at bench pressing pushes boundaries the same way that Tojima's fight with a bear raises my eyebrows. Given the end of episode 2, the idea doesn't seem quite as far fetched as it did last week. For me, this show combines with Sanda like a 1-2 punch. |

A very interesting second episode. Both Toujima and Yuriko have shown superhuman feats. They both also have an extreme obsession with the Kamen Rider verse so it indeed makes sense to think that they are tapping into some kind of energy. Given the opening and the ending of episode 2 the whole Shocker and Kamen Rider thing seems to be real to some degree. Maybe the point of the tv show is collecting energy and/or recruit new heroes? If so it is only a matter of time until mister Yakuza turns into something special too.

While I liked the previous two episodes a lot it is the third one that really sold me on the show. Shocker being a real organisation with fighters and kaiju made for a great reveal. It also makes you wonder, in particular about the tv show being a thing and where the real Kamen Rider is. Mitsuba makes for a fun addition to the group and I hope that the rest of his origin story gets shown. As for the shocker girlfriend, I wonder if she is going to remain a thing in the show or be dealt with. Maybe Mitsuba knows about her? |

Just based on her prominent place in the OP, the girlfriend ought to be around for a bit.
This show has edged out Sanda as my favorite new show. The only vague stirring of discontent is that I hope the perverted student gets disintegrated into burning cinders at some point, just because of how he alternates between gross and disturbing. Given how he was contemplating on how to blackmail Tackle into giving him sexual favors, this is obviously not an innocent first love situation. That said, I love how this show is unpredictable - for me at least - but not in an incoherent, random-for-the-sake of random way. Instead of trying to figure out where it's going like I usually do, I just watch and absorb. I do have to say, our main leads may be the most hapless heroes ever when it comes to maintaining a secret identity. Not only do they not slip off to find the modern day equivalent of a phone booth when they change, they walk boldly into a restaurant in full costume before changing (taking off a mask in the booth in Tojima's case), then openly (and loudly) talk about events. It really does feel like Tojima is connecting to some kind of universal force when he goes into that crouch stance with his fist pulled back before unleashing his chi or whatever. It was interesting that the shocker who turned his home into a greenhouse of sorts seemed to have some vestiges of humanity or compassion. There was something insect like about the way he made his "garden" more like a hive - including the bee haven that it became - but he clearly decided not to kill the children when he burned down his civilian identity. |

Oooo, baby, I'm digging this now. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. I love the fact that Shocker is real. I just hope Tomija gets with the program and obtains a proper Kamen Rider suit. I'm pretty sure Tackle is not going to let him get away with just masking it forever.
