I'm curious as to how many people view a fanscan of a manga series online first before deciding to purchase it when it's out in the stores. Anyone do this?

I do. Thanks for the wonderful scanlations, I've started/planned to collect Hikaru no Go, Hana Yori Dango, Banana Fish, Prince of Tennis, etc (most Chinese-translated though)...

I might of dismissed Hikaru no Go if not for the fanscans. And the fanscans of Love Hina made me buy the whole thing, buy each novel asap.

Fanscans of Love Hina, GTO, and Bastard all encouraged me to buy the publications.
But I was surprised to see many changes. I still have hunreds of fanscanned manga volumes on my PC, and I'm not planning to buy the real things.

I only have one fan-scan that is actually going to be published in America. I'll probably be buying it.
I extremely thankful that I get a chance to read the others!

I usually wait until the entire series is out and then buy the entire thing in one swoop. Yes, expensive, but buying it one at a time is just as expensive, and harder to deal with considering the frequent high tensions left at the end of a volume.
As for scanlations, I do download and read them, but they're almost all of series that I've already purchased... whether in English or Japanese format.
As for influence... not really. I already had set my mind on obtaining the series one way or another before I even searched out for the series. Sometimes, I download the scanlations after I already purchased the series...

i suppose everyone will find my answer as no surprise...
fanscans didn't influence what i was going to buy or not; if i read hikaru no go scans, it was because i was going to buy the series anyway, and the translation (or lack thereof) made no difference to me whether i was serious about buying the title or not. in the spirit of full disclosure: i read vols 1-9 online before finding the manga at conventions. Likewise, i've also read through a multitude of doujin scans that i never had any intention of puchasing.

The only scans I've read are of Please Save My Earth, which I'd be buying anyway on the strength of the anime, and various hentai comics which I might buy someday.

That's not the point of fanscans. I have read the fanscans of Kenshin, but that is because I *own* all the novels, and I don't read Kanji. Other people read because then they will go buy the American release. Much like fansubs, their purpose is to generate support for a series American release. If you are looking for scans of a released series, you really are under-minding the entire system. If it is a money issue, wait or borrow. Beside, you will get a better deal in graphic novels than in scans, as many scans are very poor quality.

Of course if the fanscans are being provided to translate the manga for someone that owns it then it is unnessecary to actualy scan and translate the manga. You could just translate the manga and distribute the script.

Eh, I could't find the scripts until after I was mostly done.

not yet, no.
however, one could easily buy the japanese import versions if one was too impatient, and then use the scanilations or scripts as a translation (_as they should be_) and not merely for entertainment purpose alone.
