As if I haven't made enough topics (3-4) of understanding anime and where to find resources where I can be better adapted in the community... Here is a thought and I would appreciate it if you, the reader, could give me your opinion.
Just a few minutes ago I had the idea to keep a sort of diary as some other student might keep a recording of their daily life (example - Today I went to the fair, hung out with friends, and suffered in the blazing heat of the summer months, etc.). The diary wouldn't contain small information like that I would be recording each new series, episodes, or information I come to contact with. You see, I've only watched about five titles and I'm just wanting to expand, that's all. Entries would contain the following: Name, new experience, and mainly personal views. This was I figure that if I ever wanted to know anything I could look back for reference as well as look back upon my development in the community. If you guys need anything more to base your opinion on then post it in the thread of course. Thanks for everything. |

Actually, this kind of thing has been around for a while now. They're called "anime blogs." I'm sure you could find a few if you Google the term.

I'm familiar with them but I mean a real life journal, not an Internet blog.

Oh, that could work too. Actually, I used to do something like that at work. I was just a regular cashier back then, and when they worked me mornings (which was real slow until noon), I'd have a spiral notebook with me and I'd write stuff down about anime, which I'd then retype into my My Anime reviews.

Did it help develop your knowledge and understanding?

I would say writing stuff down helped reinforce some of the notions, but that doesn't necessarily mean it helped me overall. All the stuff I commented about in My Anime includes more of a production standpoint and things I personally liked about the story or characters.
I think to understand anime more in-depth, you have to watch it over multiple times, then talk about it with other people to get different kinds of feedback and ideas, like what I'm doing in my Mushi-Shi thread. Granted, it's a lot of work, but "your fandom is your fuel" in these cases |

I actually have something like that too. Like TK, mine's just an ordinary spiral notebook. I try to write my own reviews too, so whatever comment pops into my mind I write down immediately, so when it's time to write a review I'll be sure to add it.
I also write down other information such as the original creator, the production studio, the voice actors, etc. I also include character names, important episodes, etc. so if I forget something, I just check my notebooks (I have 3 now) to remind me. |

Every once in a while when I'm watching something I'll have a notecard and a pencil and jot down things I notice that could be discussable somewhere. Then I'll use the notecard to make a post about it.

Not really. My notebook's full of scribbles, and only I can understand what's in it. My friends tried reading my notes, and they didn't get anything except for "Yoko Kanno rocks..." - a comment I wrote for Cowboy Bebop.. |

I do something similar but usually I only write down notes or thoughts quite a while after watching a particular series. I also keep a dream jornal that as of late is filled with anime references since several anime characters keep appearing in my dreams.

Interesting. I've never really heard of anime characters popping up in people's dreams before! Can I have an example? |

I didn't say that. There's not a whole lot of difference - just a different place to keep notes that's all. I don't want other people's entries... I'm just talking about MY OWN writings. They don't necessarily have to do with watching titles. Its included by I'm more focused on developing my writing skills and the ability to form logical opinions about certain things in a show. There's more but I'm sure that might not matter. |

Sure. Ikari Shinji from Evangelion is something of a regular in my dreams. He has appeared at least three times: In my first Shinji themed dream the whole cast of Eva and a bunch of other anime characters were going to the Oscars. They were all talking just outside the building and crossing the red carpet. Except for Shinji who was sitting on the curb looking extremely down. So I sit next to him and ask him what is wrong. And he tells me that Rei and Asuka were given some very cool cars by the Nerv personnel but no one bothered to give him one. Zoom in to Rei standing silently by a futuristic looking white car and Asuka next to a similar car only in red. They are both being interviewed and cameras keeping flashing. Asuka is telling the reporters that Shinji is an idiot. Shinji tells me that it was very mean of Nerv not to give him a car. In his own words: "They even gave Asuka one. But not me. I wanted a nice purple car. To go with my Eva. But no one cared about me. No one loves me." I decided to cheer him up and reminded him that Kaworu didn't have a car either. To this he replied: "He doesn't need one. Kaworu floats. He's special. He floated all the way from Nerv. I wish I could float as well. Then people would love me." Cue to Kaworu floating by and talking to someone. I then drifted away from Shinji and ended up talking to Sailor Jupiter from Sailor Moon who, it seems, was the only character who had noticed Shinji at all. She asked me who he was and I just told her to leave him alone. The dream ends with me commenting on how nice the belt that Sailor Venus (who appeared out of nowhere) is wearing. The second dream is a bit stranger. Shinji is living with me, it seems I am his guardian or something. However I use him as my personal housekeeper and give him a pile of laundry to fold. It goes all the way to the ceiling. Shinji is not happy about it and proceeds to protest. I then start this rant and go all tear eyed (!) about how much I care for him and that without me he'd be all alone in the world. Only I am lying...I just want him to watch the house for me. Shinji buys the act and it touched by my devotion. So I decide to tell him to organize my books in alphabetical order and he happily agrees to it. In fact, I convinced him that the reason I want him to work as a housekeeper is because it will cheer him up! How? Who knows. The third dream is even more bizarre. In this I am inside a Last Supper-like painting, surrounded by people that are like the apostles but not quite. We are at a restaurant and Shinji is the waiter. He is wearing a black jacket and bowtie and all. The people I am sitting with are trying to order but I tell them that the only one who can give orders to Shinji is me. And thus I unravel this amazingly long list filled with odd requests like "steak with chocolate" while Shinji dutifully juts down everything I say. At one time I dreamt with Nana and Mariko from Elfen Lied. I was trying to save them from evil people. So I tucked Nana under one arm and Mariko under the other and started to run like there was no tomorrow. Problem is, Nana was about my size which made her very difficult to carry. Not to mention her arms and legs kept falling off and I had to stop every now and then to pick them up. For some odd reason they were not at all cooperating with me. Nana ranted about her Papa the whole time and Mariko didn't say anything. I don't know why they didn't use their vectors but they did nothing but present dead weight. Yet I was very concerned and fully focused on getting them to a safe place. The most hilarious anime themed dream I had featured Light from Death Note. In this dream Light and Ryuk are inside a space ship that is about to either crash of self-destruct. They must find a way of reaching the lower levels so that they can evacuate. Light comes up with an amazing complex plan that involves hijacking the ship's computer. While he is musing over this he turns his back to the elevators. Just then the elevator's doors open and a janitor is seen inside. He looks at Light who does not see him because he is too busy figuring out how to put in practice his masterplan and then proceeds to evacuate. At this point Ryuk tells Light that it might be best to actually try the elevators first and is rebutted. Light plainly tells him to let him alone while he thinks. Ryuk shrugs and goes into the elevator shaft, flies about, and does something to get the elevator to work. Light is standing in front of the elevator doors, deep in thought, when the doors open and Ryuk steps out. Light blinks and states, in a very annoyed way: "Well, I guess that is another way of getting it done". They then embark the elevator and presumely evacuate. It seems that characters tend to remain most of their traits in my dreams only they are somewhat emphasized often in a comic way. |
