If you have Movieplex as part of you Video on Demand you can watch Akira in HD for free. I watched it side by side with the Capsule edition DVD and found that although it was clearer it was a bit disappointing. The original master for this that they used was a dirty print/negative much like the DVD release. All those specks and scratches are more pronounced in HD. There are also a bunch of grain in the image resulting in very few solid colors, and instead giving it a muddy look. Oddly enough despite this the colors were much nicer, especially the reds. I think that the HD VOD version went through some heavy noise filters since it has that strange touch up effect.
It looks nowhere as good as the Freedom HD-DVD release. I hope that some of this is a byproduct of Movieplex's processing, and the high compression of VOD. Hopefully Nandai Visual's release will look better. It does look better than the standard definition upconverted and is free, so you might want to still check this out. |
