Mini-Game!! - Evil Character Tournament (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Moderator Warning: This thread will contain unmarked spoilers. Some of the "evil" characters are not apparently evil from the start, and seeing their names in the list will constitute serious spoiler material in some cases. Proceed at your own risk. -- abunai

As you probably know, the Crazy Character Tournament has just come to a close, and following it will be the Evil Character Tournament which will be hosted by Cow-Boy_Be-Bop. ccdx, undeadben, and I have agreed to help out with the tournament, so I'm starting with a nominations thread.

We currently already have a full bracket of 128 characters, picked by Bebop, ccdx, ben, and I, based on the nominations thread opened over half a year ago, and our own experiences with heinous and villainous characters in anime. However, instead of just presenting the contestants to all of you guys and declaring it the fixed bracket for the tournament, we decided it would be a good idea to have nominations based on an amendment system, since while we don't wish to scrap an already completed bracket, we also feel that community input is important and that voters should be able to decide who they want to participate in the tournament.

Anyway, here are the rules/guidelines for nomination:
1) If you nominate a character for inclusion, you must suggest a character for removal. Basically, since the bracket already has 128, new characters are to replace existing ones that might not be as evil. If you are unsure of who to remove, feel free to ask around for peer input as to which characters are generally agreed to not be as evil as the tournament calls for.
2) Nominations & removals must be seconded to be implemented. Means someone has to second your complete nomination/removal combination for it to take effect. A vote against a particular nomination should also be factored in, acting as a "removal" of a seconding in a sense, requiring another seconding to be implemented.. [EDIT - REVISED, explanation below]

• A nomination to replace a character with another counts as +1.
  
• Any seconding/thirding/argument in support of the nomination in question also counts as +1.
  
• A nomination needs +2 to be implemented.
  
• An argument against a particular nomination counts as -1.
  

3) Please provide reasons. They need not be extremely detailed or stunningly brilliant, but please provide some justifications for your nominations (both nomination and removal, although removal can get a bit more leeway) rather than a list. This goes for seconding as well, but to a lesser extent.
4) The character must be from an anime. This might seem really obvious but characters from a title that's exclusively a manga or a game (or novel, whatever) and not an anime doesn't count. One example is any character from Battle Royale, which has spawned a live-action movie and a manga, but not an anime.
5) A maximum of three characters per series are allowed. Meaning if you want to nominate a character from a series that already has 3 characters, you must remove one of the 3 characters from the series in question.

Explanation of colors and symbols in above list:

• Highlighted in red means that there has been a nomination against the character in favor of another, but has not been seconded (the most likely scenario; perhaps, although unlikely so, there has been the nomination and exactly one vote for and one against the proposal). Or, in other words, the nomination is currently at +1.
  
• Striked out & bolded means that the nomination has been seconded (or more) and the character will be removed and replaced by the proposed character to be added in unless there's enough votes against the nomination to bring it below +2.
  
• Bolded green is what the proposed added character's name and series will be in.
  
• For clarification: Nominations come in pairs. A nomination ("proposal" henceforth to avoid confusion) isn't simply a character added (or removed), but the PAIR of proposed removed character and proposed added character. Eboshi - Alv is an example of a single nomination. This is done so that nominations with overlapping characters don't cause too much confusion (they are considered seperate nominations: Eboshi for Gantz and Eboshi for Alv are completely seperate nominations). You may "remove" your own nominations if you wish, and you may also change a character in the pair (choose a new character to be removed or added and keep the other). In such a case, the nomination's "score" resets to +1, and is considered a new nomination. You may also propose a new nomination containing an overlapping character if you're dissatisfied with one of the two.
  
• In the case that two nominations have overlapping characters, the nomination with the higher "score" (higher number when subtract # against from # for) is implemented. [EDIT - 8/21] If they are both the same, they will be included in the preliminary run-off immediately following nominations.

Just a comment. Since we have this rule here;

I would think organizing the characters by alphabetical series would be more advantageous then alphabetical name. That way it's much easier to keep up with rule 5. If you agree or think this has merit let me know and I will re-alphabetize the list myself. I figure it's my idea so it's only fair I do the work. I just didn't want to simply post it without mentioning it first.

I agree that organizing alphabetically by series is probably a better option than organizing by character name when that particular rule is in effect, but I don't think this method of alphabetizing is hopeless either, since Ctrl + F can help you determine how many characters of a particular series are currently contestants.

But yes, your way of organization is definitely better in this case. I'm too lazy to reorganize the list, but if you want to do it, go for it! I'll credit you for doing it when you're finished.

Well I'm off to work. I figure I'll bite the bullet and do it now because I got a wedding and a football game to go to tomorrow and all day Sunday I'm working a crab feast so I won't have the time. And I don't wanna open my big mouth then not deliver the goods til Monday so I'll get to work now. Give me an hour or two and I should have it done.

Btw I'll Pm you the new list Frenty when I'm done. Makes more sense I think for you to simply edit your list then me post a second huge long list.

Damn. Just perusing the list of nominees and I have already apparently absorbed a Bleach spoiler. (I'm watching the dub release on CN.)

I don't have a good answer for this question, but any ideas on how to avoid this "spoiler effect"? Other than just skipping the tournament entirely, that is.

It's going to hold true for any character where you don't know their true nature early in the series. Having a villain appear as a good guy at first or even just appear normal before their evil is recognized is a common plot device, so I'm thinking this is going to be a problem with a number of characters.

One problem I've noticed while starting to redo the list. You mentioned only 3 people from a series right? Well Fushigi Yugi has 3 and the OVA has 1 for a total of 4 from Fushigi Yuji. Now are we treating movies and OVAS as separate entities from the tv show (as in we can nominate say 3 DBZ movie villains as well) or is it 3 people from that shows universe period. Just curious.

edit---Also, do multiple seasons count as separate entities as well? Such as FMP and FMP Second Raid, or are they also just one big FMP universe with 3 characters only?

Actually, that's a result of me not having looked over the list carefully enough. Entire franchises - this includes related series like Gundam, sequels like say Rozen Maiden and Traumend, movie and OVA spinoffs, etc.- should count as one series with a 3-character limit. This means that for a nomination-removal, a Fushigi Yugi character can be the first to go. If (s)he is miraculously not gone by the end of this, we'll replace the character ourselves.

Ok, I just PM'ed you the updated list Frenty. Double check it to make sure I've got everyone since my contacts are dry as a bone and I can barely see so I might have missed someone. I don;t think so but ya never know.

Btw Sanzo from Saiyuki is one of the heroes not villains. Might want to change him for one of the villains. I know some of the villains here are kinda weak in the villain department, but needed for the full tournament, however as mentioned Sanzo is the main good guy and not a villain at all. At least use someone like Kougaji (spelling?) who is a villain.

Ah ok, there might need to be a few changes then (can't remember off top of head). I think it;s better to do it by franchise as a whole. Guess I might have to vote in a few DBZ movie villains...later though. Sleep now.

edit--- After quickly checking the PM I sent you it seems Fushiji Yugi is the only violator. Though there are a few, like Gundam Seed, where all the votes are from one specific series in the franchise. So if any others want to be included obviously one of the originals must go.

Ryuk from Death Note, definitly Ryuk.

Now, I nominate him as the most evil character not because of what he's done, but because of what he's capable of doing.

The most notable thing about him is his complete lack of principles, beliefs and motives.

Unlike some of the misguided baddies such as Lucy and Mariko in Elfen Lied he's totally aware of the moral implications and consequences of his actions, and yet he doesn't care. He doesn't care when Light slaughters thousands of people around the world, he doesn't care when one of his own kind was destroyed, and he doesn't even care about how Light might end up killing him too. Just as he himself has mentioned he doesn't owe his loyalty to anyone and he doesn't feel obliged to do what people regard as good things. He doesn't believe in anything and doesn't fear anything.

Characters such as Edmond Dantes have strong reasons/motivations for their behaviour but Ryuk is simply "bored," and his boredom is enough to cost lives. The villains who love to inflict deliberate cruelty usually have a specific type of victim and torture in mind. Ryuk finds anything and everything that slightly diverts his attention entertaining. He shows a childish delight in them and no amount of power or money can alternatively satisfy him.

Furthermore, Ryuk has the smarts. He manipulates Light subtly, dropping hints about the notebook as he sees fit in order to prolong Light's persuit of playing god. He sits back and let others do his work for him. He can see when it is appropriate to betray Light and when it isn't.
It is his infinite possibility to do evil in a million ways that make him potentially very dangerous...and, well, evil. Sure he might also do some good but I doubt it'll be half as "entertaining."

He may not be evil in other people's opinions but he's enough to replace Mononoke's Eboshi at least. Eboshi shows a lot of love for her people and is willing to stand up to anything - the emporer's army and angry giant boars included - to ensure a better/more secure life for them. She destroys the forests for such a reason and not due to malice or personal profit. It just so happens that her ideals clashes with the forest animals. She doesn't ENJOY slaying pigs and such she just perceives them as a threat. Her destructive methods may be unwise, but her intentions weren't really evil to start with.

Not to destroy your fun, or anything grinchy like that.... but just looking at that list fills me with a certain distaste for this tournament.

Why?

Well, for starters it's chock-full of spoiler material. I won't belabor the obvious, but it contains spoilers for Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Higurashi no naku koro ni, etc. And there's really no way to avoid the spoilers.

As if that were not enough, though, the list is... well, it's full of choices that show a complete lack of reflection on the personality of the character involved. Characters are listed that simply aren't evil. They're not even played for villainy, in some cases. Alyssa Searrs, Sohma Akito, and all the named characters from Higurashi, just to name the most striking ones.

Come on, is this kind of two-dimensional "they're not the good guys, so they must be the bad guys" kind of thinking really the best you can do? On the other hand, considering the putative "leader of the free world" thinks like that, I guess it's not surprising.

Long story short: if this is the level it's going to be at, then enjoy your tournament but count me out.

This list was mostly based on the last nominations thread for the tournament. We didn't feel comfortable judging the entrants between just four of us so the reason this thread was opened is to improve it. I know some characters (Akito, the Higurashi names, Hisoka from HxH, Lucy from Elfen Lied, and others) probably do not belong in the running but I don't know who should replace them on the list. I know far less shows that would have evil characters than I did for crazy ones, and even between a group of us it is difficult. So we are hoping the community here can help by pointing us towards some good entrants to replace those that should not be on the list. Hopefully in this way the level of the tournament can be raised and more people will want to participate.

I would like to nomintate two if I may:

Madame Marciano of Coyote Ragtime Show

I pick her because she doesn't give a darn about who she hurts, injures or kills in her quest to get at Mister.


Hazel of Saiyuki Reload Gunlock

I pick Hazel because he knows...knows...that what he's doing is wrong and he does it anyway. And when the wrongness is shoved in his face by Sanzo and Co., he becomes even more determined to continue to do it.

As for the 2 characters I'd like to see removed:

Alyssa Searrs from Mai-Hime

Madoushi from Cardcaptor Sakura the movie

And unless I've missed it, there isn't a villian nomitated from Akira. Surely to goodness there has to be somebody who's evil in that series. I'd nominate someone but I don't remember all of the movie.

He looks like he's Light's ally, but all he does is sit back and make sure people die from the notebook while eating apples behind the scenes.
