i just watched samurai x, a true masterpiece, and am currently watching rurouni kenshin and in the anime section here it says kazuhiro furuhashi directed samurai x and all the rurouni kenshin's (tv series, movie, etc.). a friend told me he didn't direct rurouni kenshin, only samurai x, and someone else directed rurouni kenshin. is this true or is he wrong?
if furuhashi did direct both i'm just wondering why completely changed the way the anime is drawn, made it colorful, and humorous? because he could have kept it dark, serious, dramatic, and still have kenshin not kill anymore. i'm not hating on rurouni kenshin, but i just loved everything about samurai x (drawing, story, dark, dramatic, etc.) |

The TV series was based on the manga, hence its lighter tone. The OVAs (Tsuioku-Hen and Seishouhen) were darker because, I'm guessing, Furuhashi had more license with those and sort of did his own interpretation of Kenshin somewhat removed from Watsuki's. |

Not Really.
The manga got really dark during the Kyoto arc, and just went darker during the revenge arc, which the first OAV is part of a very long flashback. The second OAV was disowned as it broke with the theme and story of Kenshin. None of it happens in the manga, and Watsuki did not want it made, as he felt it cheapened the whole story and lessened the impact of certain revelations during the revenge arc. spoiler[Specifically that Kenshin is slowly losing his strength. He trained too hard and his muscles could no longer take the strain. By the final issue, he was barely able to fight in a practice match, let alone have a real fight. By the time is son would be grown, he wouldn't be able to hold a sword.] |

Tsuioku-Hen was accurate to Watsuki's Kenshin in terms of story and mood, but stylistically it and Seishouhen still deviated for some reason. Though I won't speculate whether that was the choice of the director, art director, character designer, or what, as it seems my initial guess was a ways off.
spoiler[By the end of Jinchuu (speaking in terms of the manga), it wasn't so much that Kenshin's strength was uncontrollably failing him and he eventually couldn't even hold a sword, but that just Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu specifically was damaging his body and that he couldn't further use it. Megumi told him that moderate use of kenjutsu would still be possible as long as he avoided Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu.] |
