I've been in Japan for a few months now and thought I'd share my two cents on some of the stuff they're showing here. Some of it's been great, and some of it wants me to renounce anime forever. ^^; Nearly everything's licensed or available on BT/IRC these days, so maybe this list will help you wade through some of the stuff, though I've noticed my anime interests clash with pretty much everyone. =/
Spoiler free, btw. :)
Recommended
- Full Metal Alchemist: Gotta applaud whatever studio is producing this as I've never seen an anime with consistently impressive animation -- sometimes I wonder how they afford it. Great cast and plot too, will definitely will be in my Top 3 once I see this show to the end. And don't worry, 4Kids won't be picking this up anytime soon (though oddly enough, I first noticed it when it was advertised during Kirby over here ^^ ).
- Ashita no Nadja: The commercials imply this show is for girls 8 and under, but wow, it's one of the most captivating anime I've ever seen, and definitely for any age! I like how it's an atypical shoujo: it doesn't take place in school, no henshins, and less emphasis on romance. Plus excellent BGM, beautiful animation, a catchy OP and ED, and the most evil antagonist in my books. ;) This is the first anime that I would love and prefer to see dubbed in English, as it's hard to buy mostly-British characters speaking in Japanese.
- Bobobo Bobobo: This is the funniest and wackiest anime I've ever seen, perhaps even surpassing Digi Charet (and if you've seen that, you know this is nearly impossible to do). Definitely track this one down if you need a laugh. :) Sadly, it probably will never get licensed, not only because it isn't very PC for a children's anime, but it's also a dubber's nightmare with tons of Japanese text to paint-over/translate.
- Gashbell: The animation style and humor in this anime is just WILD, with a fantastic OP and ED (the first one anyway :P ). Fans of monster training shows should definitely check this out, though at the same time, it isn't really your typical monster training show. ^^
- One Piece: You probably all know about this guy. :) I love the current Grand Battle, it's my post DBZ-fix. :) Really funny and unpredictable at times.
- Atashin'chi: A family series on the lines of Sazaesan but sooo much more interesting than Sazae in my opinion. The animation is much better, the characters are simply adorable, and the situations and humor are really creative. I'm learning most of my casual Japanese and Japanese lifestyle from here. :)
- 12 Kingdoms: Great ancient-Japan series not set in Japan. ^^ If you like samurais and flying horses, this is the show for you! Very beautiful music, plus a nice Celtic-ish ED to boot.
- Crayon Shinchan: Will never be distributed in the West, which is a shame since it's surprisingly entertaining, heartwarming, and funny at times.
- Kochikame: Another show that'll never be licensed. Really funny show . . . most of the jokes aren't new, but the way the animators convey them is a riot. They also had a great One Piece tribute episode in December that most of you will never see. :(
- Pretty Cure: A shoujo that replaced Nadja recently, I'm only recommending it because it's the first anime I've seen with lacrosse. Go Canada!! Otherwise, standard shoujo fare, though shoujo-ai fans will probably love how the two heroines must hold hands to initiate most of their attacks. ^^
Not recommended
- Duel Masters: Not to be confused with YuGiOh Duel Monsters, though I think it's from the same people. AVOID THIS SHOW LIKE THE PLAGUE! It's the worst thing I've ever seen, devoid of all brain activity, but ironically it's associated card game is the most popular among Japanese kids. I'm not surprised to hear that it was recently licensed, as 1. all text are in English and requires no paint over, 2. instrumental-only OP and ED that sound like something straight out of an American dub and require no replacement, 3. marketable cards. Bleh.
- Pokemon Advanced Generation: I'm the only guy on this forum that loves Pokemon, and I still do, but this "new" series really disappointed me. I was looking forward to many new changes to shake things up, but all I got were new protagonist outfits. Most episodes are dull, though when a good episode comes around, it's REALLY GOOD. Look out for the two-part Togepi special. :)
- Sazaesan: I was really looking forward to this anime after hearing that it was the most popular and longest lasting anime in Japan, but never finding anything about it on the net. Even with animation that hasn't changed since the 60's, it's still always in the Top 10 ratings and often the only anime in the Top 50. But after finally watching it, I just don't get this kind of popularity, except for the obvious cultural reasons. The manga is pretty good though.
- Survivor: I actually thought this show was called "Cybering" at first when I read the katakana incorrectly. ^^ I stuck with this show since it debuted on NHK back in October but it never grew on me and I've finally given up on it. Really catchy ED though.
- Pichi Pichi Pitch: I know this show has a big fansub following, and I followed it for a dozen episodes, but I've finally given up on this one too. It just feels like a bad Sailor Moon clone except with uninteresting characters, cheap music, and a storyline that never ends.
Undecided
- Ojaru Maru, Rantaro: I really liked these 10 minute back2back NHK favorites at first, but I've lost my interest of late. I think I used to watch just to hear Ojaru and Shinbei's voice, they're very cute and unique.
- Kasumin: This show has its ups and down's, but they find the strangest ways into your heart, like the story of a printer with amnesia, or a tea kettle trying to find its parents. Kasumin's voice is wonderfully cute and needs to be heard at least once.
- Crash Gear Nitro: Kids enter tournament with toy cars that they control with their mind. Dammit, it shouldn't be good, but the three episodes I've seen were. Kudos to the CGI artists, the battles look great. Not sure if it's all good because I've given up trying to wake up at 7 to watch it.
- Astroboy: More dull episodes than I expected, though I think you need to know Japanese to really appreciate it. What balances it out though is the many Tezuka character cameos, great music, and the 2nd OP being my choice for best OP ever. :) Too bad it sounds like KidsWB ripped up the music in the West from the trailer I saw.
- Muryo: Only caught three episodes before it ended. Those three episodes were really entertaining though, kind of reminds me of a less psychotic version of Evangelion.
- Gilgamesh: Don't really like the animation, unique-looking designs but the movement's kinda stiff. But it uses some interesting techniques I've never seen in anime, and the opening animation is pretty cool even though it has no animation, if that makes sense. ^^
- Naruto: Thumbs in the middle, leaning up. The action is sometimes bogged down by filler: ex. In a recent episode, they fight for the first five minutes, then stop for the guy to talk about his history for the rest of the episode. It also suffers a little from the jarring "we're serious / we're silly" atmosphere. Otherwise, mostly good animation and interesting concept.
- Q: kinda reminds me of an anime Scooby Doo, it's usually mediocre but supposedly a big hit in Japan. It's shown at 6 am where I live so I've kinda given up following it after a few episodes.
It's true that anime fans tend to write more than the average person, isn't it? ^^
