Well, i just got home and found that the June issue of Shonen Jump had arrived and what do i see on the cover? I see a picture of a Dr Pepper can advertising a "Dr Pepper Manga Contest". Great... so does this mean Shonen Jump will now have tons of soda and McDonalds ads on every other page? They already have ads for SJ graphic novels on EVERY FRICKING page! Do they really need to sink low enough to splash us with crappy generic ads that have NOTHING to do with manga? I can understand video games, anime, and related toys.... but soda? Ok, so this *is* a manga contest sponsored by Dr P, but must it be on the front cover with a big picture of a can?

Mostly i'm just going off on a rant here. Yeah i'm sure many people knew stuff like this would happen, but still, it really irks me. I'm glad i got the 4 year subscription deal when it was still cheap. Now a ONE year subscription is either $29.95 (according to their on-page ad) OR $34.95 (according to one of the little subscription cards.) Confused

Something tells me Shonen Jump might take a turn for the worst.

***EDIT*** prices are for the one year subscription. Sorry if i made anyone think the 4 year subscriptions are that cheap.

BWAHAAH! I just read about this.

I think this is the funny part...their slogan:
"Be You, Be a Pepper, Be Manga"

Be a Pepper?

So, let me get this straight.

You are complaining about:

1. Large companines wanting to advertize in a popular magazine

2. Said magazine acceptes these ads, increasing their reveneu, which can be used to liscense new series.

3. A 4 year subscription is $34.95? Well, i'll go check Amazon.com for subscription rates. People (1 year = $50) Southern Living (1 year = $45). Seems better than most

Pardon me if I don't play the world's smallest violin...

lol, well like i said, i was going off on a rant. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop What i was complaining about was that SJ used to have very few ads and it had a cheap price. Now it's getting way too many ads and jumping up in price while the quality and quantity seems to be the same. If they use the ads to add more manga, i wouldn't mind as much. But the question is, when will we see any aditions to SJ? (other than more ads)

Oh, and sorry about the confusion on the prices. The $29.95 (or $34.95???) are for ONE year subscriptions. When i got my 4 year they had me pay the usual one year (which was $19.95 at the time), then they had me pay $39.95 for the other three years.

I think pairing with a soft drink company isn't really a bad move on their part. For the demographic that reads Shounen Jump, they're gonna think it's pretty cool. Hey, if I were a teen, seeing Yugi or Kuwabara drinking Dr. Pepper...I'd want to drink it too. Even better if it were my design of them drinking Dr. Pepper.

Well, it could be worse. Now if they start doing "product placement" into the manga... What, that's not a can of coffee, but now a can of Dr. Pepper in the hand of (insert random character) then you will have something to gripe about. Advertising and pricing is one thing, editing the content of the original product on the other hand could be considered a rather poor business practice. Smile

How ironic that I was just making fun of otaku in another thread, and they actually are upset about Dr. Pepper advertising for the mag. Anyway, rage, it's normal to see ads for non-manga products all the time in Japanese magazines, because they need to make money. Now as long as Jump doesn't turn into another EGM-which is unlikely, because we already know which games Jump's paid to promote-getting a big company like Dr. Pepper to support the magazine should be a cause for celebration, not gloom. But speaking of taking a new low, how did Anzu in Yu Gi Oh suddenly get big breasts? I guess she has the same secret as Britney Spears. http://www.liquidgeneration.com/poptoons/britneys_breasts.asp (Not suitable for work.)

Well, now that i've actually taken a moment to relax after a long day it doesn't seem like such a big deal. But as i said earlier, my biggest complaint was that SJ is increasing their ads without showing any improvement.

As for the manga in Japan containing unrelated ads, aren't they much thicker and cheaper than SJ? And some of those are weekly instead of monthly. If some how SJ could get up to 800 pages then i'd be all for the ads if they helped contribute to it. For now, i'll live with it as long as they don't start sticking ads in the middle of graphic novels.

Maybe they could draw in new scenes of the characters drinking Dr. Pepper ala Godzilla 1985.

Insert poorly-drawn panel of Orochimaru getting beaned upside the head by a can of Dr. Pepper.

Or even better, have all the kunai for the next several pages redrawn as Dr. Papper cans!

It seems to me, Rage, that you've uncovered Shonen Jump's profit plan.

Launch a magazine with way too many pages to be profitable at 5.00. Get kids buying it. Don't overload it with ads.

Wait a year or so. Slowly increase the number of ads so you aren't losing your shirt on every issue any longer. Keep the content the same, but put more ads in. Giant companies like Dr. Pepper (Liann, "Be A Pepper" has been Dr. Pepper's incredibly stupid slogan since the 1970's or so) sponsoring your magazine makes things even better. Make money, continue to publish Shonen Jump. Fans get manga, you get money.

Expect the same thing to happen to Newtype. Once you start seeing ads from Nissan and Reebok in Newtype, you'll know they've made it a successful magazine.

Lol, I would LOVE to see that.

I have no problem with the ads at all. I get some of the Japanese manga magazines, and they are stuffed full of adds. Sure, they're bigger, but not all are cheaper then Shonen Jump we get here. As for the price increase, they could either just be doing it to make a profit, or who knows, they may be doing it to make their magazine thicker. They ARE getting more titles, like Bleach. If Bleach will be running in Shonen Jump here, and Prince of Tennis *not sure if it's been announced yet* the magazine may get thicker, and I'll be hauling out for a subscription. Now if only they could make it two releases a month or something... but oi, the price would jump even more.
