The september issue of Forbes has an article about the guy who started ADV Films, in houston. Pg. 180. My dad noticed the azumanga Daioh picture, and ripped it out for me. I guess the anime has gotten to him...

Some ADV numbers:
They pay $1 million to $2.6 million for the distrobution rights for a series.

$500,000 to $5 million for a movie.

Sound costs $10,000 to $20,000 for 1/2 hr. worth of sound.

They've got 400 voice actors on the payroll.

Only used up about $50 million to start the Anime Network. Most cable channels use $100 million.

1500+ anime titles

Main competition is cartoon network, whose lineup is actually 25% anime.

I certainly learned a lot today.

It's interesting to see them discussing Ledford price-gouging people on imported games. I guess that's how he later got the idea for NewType.

ADV owns the anime industry in North America, so this doesn't really surprise me. Gatsu: Lay off the ADV bashing Neutral

Actually, I like ADV more than most anime companies, but their business decisions as of late have been a little questionable.

I can agree a bit there. I really don't like what they are doing to Newtype.

Plus, i've been hearing that some folks have taken their Newtype gripes to new levels.

I know some folks that now refuse to buy anything ADV untill Newtype gets their DVD's back. No Anime, no Manga......

Personally, i'm in a Right Stuf/Geneon phase, so I don't have to participate in silly boycotts.

Since Newtype was too expensive for me to buy every month in the first place, I don't need to participate in a boycott, DVD or no DVD.

I'm still buying Super GALS! when I can afford it.

Well, the price gouging bit IS true. He used to sell Super Faicoms for $1500 when they were newish, and then he'd sell import games for $150 when they'd be coming out in the US in like 2 weeks. I really reccomend everyone pick up this issue or at least read the article.

lol whats so wrong with adv they arent that bad. but i wonder why they dont have gasaraki or rahxephon which have 8, have on 6 discs like evangelion or nadesico and why they have wild arms on only 5 discs. there a lot better than some like Animeigo cause they have the orginal bubblegum crisis on 4 discs and then it costs like 70$the entire series of 8 or 10 episodes and they have your under arrest with only 3 episodes on disc instead 4 like a lot of other titles with 52 epsiodes

RahXephon was actually seven and Evangelion had eight. The Platinum Edition of Eva will have seven though. Seven seems to be the number that they've been settling on recently.

Of course people are willing to buy things at gouged prices. It's just the amount by which he gouged is astonishing.
