The title says it all, this is a thread for discussing the academy
awards and anime's place in them.
Basically, I have no idea how they work and I've been wondering;
what qualifies an anime for an award, which series you think
should have been nominated in the past, and whether or not
Arriety is going to be nominated.
Well there you have it, commence posting. I'd appreciate it.
Edit: I really don't have a position on the academy awards
except that I know I'd like to see more anime films nominated.
I want to discuss the rules and qualifications with others so as
to learn more.

I think anime should only be nominated if it's worthy of a nomination; i.e. if something's a high quality, well made and well respected film. It shouldn't be nominated just because it's anime.

To qualify a film for eligibility in the US the distributor has to release the film in a qualifying run in a qualifying theater (one in LA County) in the United States before the end of the year and be entered for eligibility. This is often only for a week, so special screenings at film festivals, conventions ansd such don't count. An originally foreign film like Arrietty or Redline have some leeway, I think as long as they are released within two years of their original release they don't have to be made eligible immediately.
Another thing to remember is how tricky the animation nomination slots are."In any year in which 8 to 12 animated features are released in Los Angeles County, either 2 or 3 motion pictures may be nominated. In any year in which 13 to 15 films are released, a maximum of 4 motion pictures may be nominated. In any year in which 16 or more animated features are released, a maximum of 5 motion pictures may be nominated. " So, they want the 5 spots open in order to get the most chances for all of their films to get a nominations but I think Disney probably held back a qualifying run for Arrietty this year because it would have weakened the chances for their own films in a year that already had enough films (18) to qualify for the 5 spots. I figure It's almost certain Arrietty will be eligible next year and Disney will submit it.
Redline though, that's not Disney, maybe Manga/Anchor Bay don't think it has a chance and aren't bothering? Maybe they're gambling it will have a better chance next year? It also costs money just to properly promote a movie, Funimation found that out when they campaigned for Summer Wars, which can be a gamble if you don't even get a nomination.

I feel the accademy doesn't have any taste what so ever, ( this is just my oppinion) like they put Wallace and Gromit curse of the ware rabbit over Howl's moving Castle, I've seen Wallace and Gromit and it SUCKED! And I can understand and be happy about Toy Story 3 winning a couple of years ago (cause of the Totoro camio's) but Summer wars not being a finalist! That sucks!

Yeah, my taste in movies rarely ever lines up with theirs either. That's why I stopped caring about those award shows a long time ago. Unfortunately, in most people's eyes that would mean WE have bad taste in movies not them.

If the US dub of Arietty played theaters within a year of being released in Japan, and included screenings in NY and LA, it qualifies to at least compete for Best Animated, as Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle did.
If the subtitled version of Summer Wars, Pon Poko or Princess Mononoke was Japan's official national entry for Best Foreign Language, it must be screened by private committee, and the committee will likely snub it out of the five-nomination race for not being as deeply characterized as this year's war-torn Middle-Eastern film.
(Well, that was how it happened the last times.)
