I always hear about yaoi but what exactly is it? I know it has to do with males.

It's the term used for describing an anime/manga that has guy on guy relationships. The term for girl/girl I believe is yuri.

Just to clarify a bit:
Yaoi/Yuri describes the more hardcore, explicitly sexual relationships between a guy/guy or girl/girl. The sweeter, not as graphic relationships are shounen-ai or shoujo-ai. For more information, click on the lexicon link under the Encyclopedia category to your left. |

Yup, that kinda sums it up. There also are alot of doujinshi (fan made mangas) that are yaoi for existing series. Some of these I don't get, like a Blade of the Immortal yaoi (c'mon, what girl/gay guy wants to see a one eyed guy covered head to toe in scars act queer?)
I'm male and heterosexual, so I really don't get it or bother reading it. But alot of people on this board live by it. |

LOL... yeah, I think everything that needs to be said pretty much has been. For the most part, it's only women who read yaoi (plus a few guys like myself who prefer bishounen rather than bishoujo) and I would guess mostly guys who read yuri (although I really wouldn't know anything about that, not being especially interested in the genre). |

It's not so much that I'm crazy for yaoi ... I'm just plain old crazy. Yaoi is only one of my many crazes.

Personally,I'm NOT into Yaoi.
Still,I prefer Shoujo-ai to Yuri. |

Lets also consider the diversity of readership. There are many different types of people who read and enjoy manga: men, women, old, young, gay, straight, etc... As a business, the manga community wouldn't want to exclude anyone, and because Mangaka are also diverse, we get very diverse manga. I have always been curious as to the popularity of Yaoi among women though. I'm geussing it would be the same reason that men would like Yuri?
