Just wanted to say, I appreciate and enjoyed the impression writeup for this. Despite falling into the hole myself l, I never checked these out. Kudos!

I, too, fell incredibly hard for Towa's singing. I do wonder what is Hololive's plans to expand their 3D capabilities with how international their talent has become. They have some great Indonesian talent worth following.

I love the Hololive girls, but I encourage everyone who reads this to look at the bigger world of vtubers.

there is Nijisanji, and its over 100 members, but you could also start with Holostars, Cover's male virtual idol branch, who have thankfully been rising in popularity the past few months. no I don't want to get into what it means when you have a separate branch for your male talents, but I can assure you they're all very entertaining dudes, as well as good singers.

Thank you for an article! It was an interesting read and the only complain I have is a mistake a lot of people who just began to watch vtubers make: generalization of "vtuber" concept.
"I at least came out the other side, I think, genuinely understanding the appeal of VTubers and their fans now." is incorrect, because this live(s) would present you an appeal of Hololive.

The world of vtubers is so much more vivid, rich with various ideas, approaches that saying something like this akin to a claim "I saw Love Live and now I understand the appeal of anime and what anime fans love".

Heck, there're vtubers that can't play/don't like video games and their content: simple talk (zatsudan) or karaoke. And those vtubers are very popular! Because they are great singers/speakers, have interesting personality or simply just fun entertainers.

Not to mention, just how much efforts they put in their content, how much they train to dance, sing. Don't forget that a lot of them are not pros, just a regular people. There was one case when a vtuber got in hospital after she practiced singing for 10h, on top of having bad sleeping schedule (all of it after debuting on Sony). You can say "Well, she shouldn't have pushed herself this hard" and... I would agree, but she didn't want to be half-assed about her work, about her training. This is how much she cared about it...

A lot of vtubers I know have this goal: to make people recognize them for their talent, personality, not as "2D/3D anime avatar", but as a person, as a creator, entertainer or singer. They work hard so people would respect them and treat as equal. As example... You know, how there're great anime series anyone can watch? Whether you are an otaku or not, it won't matter. Like Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon movies. Something like GiTS. A lot of vtubers want to make content that would go beyond "otaku" audience.

You mentioned that is hard to understand the in betweens of live concerts because they are all in Japanese, so I suggest checking out Takanashi Kiara's (HololiveEN) watchalongs, she did english translations live for both 2nd Fest and the latest Bloom festival from Hololive.
