Can't wait for Mappa to crash n burn. It's inexcusable to treat animators like this while raking in millions.

I am not surprised. But I am also not happy with the fact that I am not surprised. At this point, it is just the difference between we find out or not, not whether it can happen to this production or that production.

but offered rates that are fair relative to the budget of the project

Oh yeah, we did not offer bad wages, we just got crap budget. From what I heard, Pony Canyon refused to increase the budget for S4, which considering AOT is one of the biggest show on the block right now, is not good.

Also not surprised in the slightest, every single bit of good sakuga in AOT: The Final Season has been punctuated in my mind with the repeating thought of 'God, I hope the animators aren't killing themselves with overwork here." And then a good portion of them have to start setting up the groundwork for Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 right afterwards...

I'm not sure if I am okay with getting quality shows by the cost of people literally working themselves to death... but again, I am just a gaijin, an outsider who brings nothing to the table and can't affect it in any way other than buying/not buying manga, blu-rays and merch Sad I just want for staff to get enough rest and getting paid, because they deserve it... I mean all people do. But higher-ups don't seem to care, MAPPA is releasing Chainsaw Man, JJK, AoT AND Hell's Paradise, one or two would be more than enough stress for one studio.

I hope it’s not too long before this barbaric practice is removed. Paying people “relative to the budget” is not something which should ever go hand in hand.
I know KyoAni and to some reasonable extent ufotable and Polygon Pictures among others pay much better and/or encourage healthy working practices so it can be done. Demon Slayer remains a consistently god tier rate for the animation so it’s not hard to pay well and maintain that level of quality.
Less is more so Mappa should take that on board and reduce the number of shows they commit to every quarter.

MAPPA will reportedly pay these new hires a salary of 230,543 yen (about $2,100 USD) a month, which is higher than industry average for new animators, and is even higher than what's offered by studios such as Kyoto Animation or Studio Ghibli.

In just about every Japanese animation studio, there’s different groups working on different anime. So they’re not as overworked as people think they are. For example, the group who are working on AOT are not the same group who worked on JJK.

Actually they are not employees of MAPPA. Those animators that complaining about money are freelancers because they paid less in the anime industry

Oh, you're that guy from Twitter who has been confidently spreading the same misinformation. For your information what you just said is nonsense and has been debunked ages ago.

You have this notion that just because each show has a separate team they aren't as overworked even though their shows have proven to have staff overlaps and very tight schedules.

Saying only freelancers are complaining about the money is funny considering a lot of them are under contract and implying the employees are paid much better when the studio is literally carried by freelancers.

Please don't be a corporate bootlicker.

I believe it.
It's the huge corporations and members of the production committees that are pushing these low wages. If even Netflix pays absolute bottom rates for Japanese Animation you just know where the problem truly lies.

This is depressing, and as the target audience, it really should be discussed what we (as the fans) can do. As much as I’m all about purchasing merchandise and BluRays to help with funds, we don’t actually know where that money is heading.

Wish it was possible to somehow contribute to these companies directly or have some transparency about how much funding actually goes into certain anime, animators and studios. People throw around these estimates and numbers, but I’ve never seen anything really concrete.

Personally, I think one solution is to reduce the number of anime that’s being made every year. Dozens of anime are cranked out throughout each season, but only a small fraction of them are actually good enough to be remembered. We should be more concerned for quality over quantity, in my opinion. And reducing the number of anime that’s being produced could give animators and directors more flexibility in their schedules and time to focus on anime that’s more suited for their style, rather than just to meet a quota.

Of course this is just my two cents. I know it’s more complicated than that and may require reworking the anime industry entirely.

We do, which is the investors who put down money in the first place during pre-production. The studio itself typically are given a budget prior to the start and that is all they have to work with. They are exceptions for sure, but the norm in the industry is to set a budget prior. Any revenue that comes in is pre-decided amongst the investors on how much each investment party is going to get from the total revenue.

The studio, unless prior agreements exist or is on the Production Committee themselves, do not get more money just because the revenue is higher/ when we buy more merch/discs.

The investors decide how quickly a show needs to produced / the revenue turnaround time. So word around the block is that anime is getting more and more popular, the investment is POURING into the industry. So your idea works on a micro/studio level, but not does work on a macro/industry level. Right now there is SO MUCH money to be made with the industry, investors are making studios work more so the revenue can come in faster.

Indeed. But this is asking the execs/higher ups to change/reform as well, who is purportedly stuck in the Sengoku Period.

I I think we all saw this coming when they announced like 4 different projects in production. On top of that, they're almost certainly making Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. How can anyone not think crunch is going on at this company?
