Because we really need more people striking down stuff that's legally unavailable in our country, yeah.

This doesn't just apply to manga translations. There's a huge problem with people stealing art off of public sources like DeviantArt and then using it to sell t-shirts and other merch.

Yes, I think this is really more about this type of copyright infringements - when it comes to manga/etc. it's usually publishers/other copyright holder entities handling it, not individuals. But I've seen mangaka and illustrators complaining about people stealing their original artwork from Twitter, Pixiv, etc. and either using them to make money, or just reposting them all over the place, making memes out of them, etc; or webnovel authors having their works translated without their permission, etc. And aside of this being just shitty, it usually results in the artist/author deciding not to post their works anymore in public places (I know a bunch of artists and webnovel authors who have removed their works even from Narou/etc. after having been informed of them being fan-translated without their permission). Regardless of one's stance on fan translations, it's undeniably shitty when the stolen works are used to make money.

Generally, I'm just sick and tired of people treating work by Japanese artists/authors as public property. It's been so even back in the day, before the days of pixiv/etc., when people even raided artists' and fanartists' websites, downloaded the artworks posted there and reposted them for basically social capital, but at least in those times the money-making aspect wasn't as prevalent. Now, though, people are just shameless. (Hell, even scanlations and fan-translations are not done in hush-hush anymore!) And yes, art theft happens to Western artists as well, but they have better chances to fight it... due to the language barrier and cultural differences Japanese artists are a lot less willing to go out and fight, they usually just say "okay, I guess I just won't post my stuff online, then".

Asking for donations goal (otherwise they stopped translating) on a title they have no license for is rather common issue.

While the merchandise, IP usage that used illegally without the artist or author permission is common, the part where they make money from it is a big deal
Remember that mangarock did that in their luxury office and steal ripped official scans while making quite amount of money from subscription and advertisement.

Likewise taking down scanlation may affect fans or potential release in different region because it essentially does kill the needed advertisement which likely will never get translated without the highlights

I never get why me not being able to buy stuff because I cannot afford it means I will somehow be able to afford it if its not available online.
If I only have $50 to spend on entertainment that's that.
I'm going to spend that $50 on books, games, merch, shows, etc, either way because its something I love.
So really its just a matter of missing out on something I love because I can't afford it which really does nothing for anyone.
Company does not get my money and I don't get to enjoy something I love.

I hate the theft of people's art for profit but if someone is not going to make it available themselves there is not much of a choice for a lot of us.
I also feel like there is a pretty big difference between a major company doing this purely for profit vs an artist who doesn't want their art stolen to use to scam people.

I wonder if this will extend to assisting musical artists who have their music incorrectly credited to someone else on Youtube, for example?

Seems like a great idea. In the Internet Age, author's rights have become something only huge media conglomerates can generally afford to protect.

Just hope innocents aren't caught in the crossfires like an accidental strike or anything like that.

That depends what you mean by innocent. A lot of people have a misunderstanding of what fair use is when it comes to reusing art and music.
