Well, it's no War for Cybertron and I'd rather get more to play as than Bumblebee...but it might be a solid action platformer.

Shame it's just a Bumblebee game, I think a mission based game using the Terrans, each with different abilities would be much more interesting.

I'm shocked Prime's not playable.

A $30 game based off the kids show as opposed to say, the films or the new comics Skybound is making, but an open world and a script from Simon Furman, the Chris Claremont of Transformers.

Still, you’d think that a game like this would be focused on the Terrans, or at least other bots besides Bumblebee. It’s not like the Terrans are unpopular, the internet seems to like Twitch, or as I’ve recently been calling her, Robo-Suletta.

They can’t all be War for Cybertron or Devastation I guess.

Why would you make a TF game based off the films?

Because they did during the 360/PS3 era, and the ill-fated Rise of the Dark Spark had the film continuity as part of its plot. You know, to promote the films. The films also aim older than the cartoon has (by design) so any tie-in game would likely aim for an older audience.

I'm no fan of Earthspark, but it makes more sense to make a licensed game based on a cartoon than any of the comics, even if it's just shovelware for the kids. Transformers comics have never been relevant or popular outside the original Marvel run and UK series. Not really a viable market. And movie licensed games seem to have stopped being a thing, at least on home consoles. Mobile games are probably more appealing for that kind of market these days for companies looking to make a quick buck on a popular movie or show.

It's a shame Devastation and War for Cybertron are stuck in the void of licensing issues and unavailable legally as they're easily the best (or alternatively, only good) Transformers games.

That’s well and good but you and I both know that games based off of movies tend to not be very good. And the Transformers games well the first and only one I played was not good.

License games based on a specific movie or show are almost never good. But recently we've seen licensed games be more generalized and not based on any specific movie and turn out better for it like Spider-Man, Hogwarts Legacy, the first few Arkham games. The main issue with licensed games is they have such short dev time to match the release of the specific show or movie they're based on and good games needs proper dev time. I hope we get another general Transformers game down the line sometime.

There is still a fairly decent amount of effort in this given the budget price point and license source. An open world setup and a story from Simon Furman are things that you wouldn’t get if it was a complete cash in. There’s some effort here.

They’ve been making original video games based off of IPs like Batman & Spider-Man for years even before the Success of their semi most recent titles those franchises turned out some acceptable titles.

Now most of them were not very good and some had notorious elements such as backbreaking difficulty but they weren’t all bad either.

Many many video games have had years of development time and still come out middling or simply terrible. That indicates that it’s not always lack of time that causes these games to be not be good.
