The best news in years. Good riddance. As a fan of Japanese games, Jim was the absolute worst and then some regarding other decisions. That showcase earlier this year was the 1st time I ever felt my time watching something related to PS was wasted. It can't get worst than Jim, right? Right? RIGHT?

The rule of thumb for all CEO's who retire is they are leaving because things are about to get bad and they want to make all that wealth they horded good and protected and It's never the reason they give for retiring

I can't say that I'm sorry to see this. Maybe not every decision by Playstation that I haven't liked in the last several years wasn't entirely him, but he was in a position to either approve them, or reverse course if customers weren't happy.
I doubt we'll see any major changes now, and the interim guy is probably isn't going to shake things up since he isn't the named replacement, but more and more the decisions coming out of the company were in the category of "How does this make sense?" that I can't help but think that anyone else has a chance of being better. |

There are lots of reasons a CEO will retire and most aren't publicly noted, but usually, when we hear something like this, it turns out it's more likely that shareholders and company reps simply pressured the CEO to retire early. They'll do that for any reason, ranging from "Things are going good, so we want to take this opportunity to make big changes to the way the company is run while the reputation is still good" to "You messed up, the company is soon on its way down (or already there), and we want to recuperate our investment, so we're going to try and save this sinking ship". Among many others. And no, none of us know the exact reason here, or even if it was pressure to retire in the first place. But I highly doubt the CEO is abansoning ship on its path into an iceberg. Sony is still huge and any CEO would still make a ton, even if they kept it going downhill. |

Because saying such a thing could lead to things such as the company’s stock dropping. Not to mention in some instances the company may already have problems before it’s leadership decides to stand down. |

Good. Sony Just leave America and go back to Japan and get a competent CEO because America has been failing Sony for the past 7 years And i'm tired of the lazyness.

Or... he is probably just retiring...
Most of the moves he has made might be disappointing to gamers, particularly those of us who care about single player or Japanese games, but his moves into GAAS and online stuff, and PC and general profitability, and no more money being wasted on E3 and good showcases that are now just trailer reels where you don't care about 3/4ths of stuff are absolutely in line with what the shareholders are demanding. So I'm confident it isn't anything to do with his position being in doubt. The PS hype has died compared to the PS3/4 era, but the corps know they can save money now by just throwing a trailer online 6 months prior to release without the 4+ years of updates to anticipated games. And for the most part, they are right. It hasn't hurt a game's ability to perform on the market. If there is any issue, it could be that many titles depending in GAAS and online are taking a long time, are in danger of being cancelled and are MIA like the Last of Us online. Sony embarked on over 10 projects like this, but I'm assuming they know that 7 will fails, 2 will be decent also-rans and only 1 will succeed massively that will make up for the loss of the others. In general for service games, 9 will fail for every 1 that succeeds, so Sony is hedging their bets by creating 10. |

I can't say I've been happy with Sony the past decade or so, but I also don't think it's the sole fault of one CEO so I don't expect things are really going to change at all. I doubt the new guy is suddenly going to revive Ape Escape and go back to 90s era Sony.

You Tojoboos need to stop bitching. Japan's third world corporate culture is a huge detriment for creating good coders who are worth three dollar figures a year. Even top entertainers are treated little better than Sweatshop workers. |
