This was one manga I didn't enjoy. Probably for all of the reasons you listed. I'm trying to understand why I enjoyed Aishiteruze Baby though. They seemed to be somewhat in the same vein of stories. At least from my view.
Maybe i'll give this one another go. |

It took me only five minutes to find a torrent of complete 35 episodes; you just have to know more languages then. 
Sadly, there's no one sharing this old title.

That's debatable, since Viz said they were always planning to shuffle new manga in the magazine. And the significant amount of fan art for it makes me think it wasn't as unpopular as you make it seem.
One of the Nanas only had a grandmother to take care of her, so I still disagree that the theme is unpopular. I think the only real strike against it is that it's from the early 90s, and it shows. YYH is probably the only manga series which has survived being so "old" here; and I imagine that's due to the quality of the anime. [I don't count DBZ, because that got released here only a few years after its end in Japan.]
Actually, there are a few fantasy elements the author occasionally inserts into the story. But in general, I feel the escapism it offers is in the form of being able to relive the pleasant moments of your childhood. Yeah, it does get sad at times, but the appeal comes in how simple those moments are, rather than the kind of stuff you have to deal with as soon as you hit puberty.
That's how I feel about Rie Takada. However, I think the art in B+M is supposed to convey the simplicity of the moment.
Yeah, but it's in an underdog sort of way, not a "too emo for people to understand me" sort of way that's popular nowadays.
You could always suggest we pester Viz to license it and release it via Rightstuf like they did with Maison Ikkoku....

I remember watching this during my college days and thought that this was one of the best ones to get adults and parents into anime due to the realistic situations and accurate portrayal of the mentality of a pre-teen like Takuya who suddenly had to give up on many things to look after his baby brother and the house during his father's absence.
I remeber how it kind of broke my heart every time a friend invited him to play, or go somewhere to have fun and he had to decline to watch Minoru and even if he got angry and went through a phase in which he hated Minoru or thought of him as a burden I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. Reading this article has filled me with nostalgia to search for the series and rewatch it. |

I've read a good chunk of this in Shojo Beat, and I can't say I liked it or didn't like it. It was ok, but didn't really move me. For me having seen Aishiteruze Baby first I think kind of ruined this for because they are such similar stories and I think Aishiteruze Baby does it better.

It's sad that this titles was never completely fansubbed on vhs, but I do know that I have 26 of the 35 episodes that were subbed by Sachi on tape. I actually got into the series after reading it in Shojo Beat, and I always thought that Viz took out titles from the magazine that were more popular because they figured they'd make more out of it selling the graphic novels, I'm probably wrong though.

I liked Baby and Me but not super super like. I liked it enough to read in a mag. I would like to watch this series though.

I haven't seen the anime, but I did read Baby & Me in Shojo Beat.
I have to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of it at first, but it gradually really grew on me. I was surprised at some of the topics the manga covered and how well-balanced it was in the story. It wasn't all sad, but then life for Takuya and his family weren't always perfect either. It made it much more real and enjoyable to read. And now that it's gone from Shojo Beat, I actually miss it. They dropped it just as the story was getting really interesting. spoiler[They dropped it just when you find out that Takuya was basically an accident and the reason his parents had to get married. A surprisingly serious story element for such a series and it was handled really well.] I think Haruka was what replaced Baby & Me. Definitely not a fair trade there.  I hate Haruka and don't even read it. But I didn't really appreciate Baby & Me until it was gone which is unfortunate.

I've been accused of enjoying what one forum member once called "tragedy porn" -- pathos, usually involving children in unspeakably horrible situations, purely for pathos' sake. While I'm probably guilty of that to some extent (I loves me some good childhood trauma!), I don't think that's quite fair. Tragedy is as much part of the human experience as laughter, and if a show can be high quality and revel in one, there's nothing wrong with spending time with the other. I consider both to be important for a well-rounded viewing experience.
the main reasons TV cartoons had quality some years ago. now cartoons are just for silly entertainment. A good televised schedule should have cartoons of all types of course, but today dramatic cartoons of that kind are not featured anymore. the main reason the series 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother was cancelled in Argentina and the series Tico and Friends was cancelled too in another country. |

I was not a fan of the manga at all, but I miss it now that Haruka Beyond the Streams of Time has taken it's place. It sounds like a concept that may have been easier for me to swallow in anime format- it's too bad it's not licensed.
Interesting note on the reason why it was dropped in Shojo Beat. Is that the official reason, or something you just guessed on? I also thought Shojo Beat maybe dropped the titles they dropped based on popularity, but as another member here said, I thought they always planned to cycle out old and new series anyway, so I thought maybe they dropped the least popular ones and figured anyone who wanted to follow it could go ahead and buy the books. |

Baby and Me was broadcast and had a good number of reruns years ago, in a certain place outside of Japan. It's the Aishiteruze Baby back in the days. While I loved both titles, I felt Baby and Me was slightly more realistic, perhaps because adults took a larger role in educating and interacting with the kids in it. The television adaptation of Baby and Me had some really nice animation for its time. And the second set of opening and ending are some of my favorite pieces.
Now that I have a chance to look at the encyclopedia entry for this title, I spotted a few interesting names on the staff list. In particular, Tatsuya Ishihara and Kazumi Ikeda are heavyweights from Kyoto Animation, and Kenji Kawai is, well, Kenji Kawaii.
I love tragedy, porn, and cute little things. What better combination! OH! Wait a minute... |

I also have to say that I don't think lack of an audience was the reason Baby and Me was dropped from Shojo Beat. It was serialized for quite a long time and I think if lack of an audience was the reason it would have been removed sooner. Mainly I think they just want to showcase a lot of different series. After all, NANA did get pulled out and it's the biggest series SB has (of course it also does now have an M rating which definitely would have played into that decision, though I still question how absolutely necessary that was).
