It is a shame that this series didn't really garnered a mainstream/casual audience. With its focus on well-known myths/gods/historical figures, I daresay even the most casual watcher could find enjoyment in this. However, it has been an uphill battle ever since S1's rather below average performance due to its limited animation I'm sure. S2 was not any better & I think it was even worse than S1 in some parts (Buddha fight especially). This season a marked improvement in the animation department but not by much. I do find it kinda funny that the best fight animation the show could offer was in a brief flashback & not even one of the main fights. Did they somehow outsource that particular segment to some animator who decided they wanted to put in a bit more than what's required of them? Who knows Laughing

The review is more or less on point with what the series is & what it's been doing but to say it hasn't tried to pull off anything out of the norm is not entirely accurate. While S1 has pretty much done exactly as what's described, S2 dropped a huge gamechanging moment such as Buddha suddenly deciding to fight for humanity at the very last second so now we get a God vs God battle instead. Not knowing beforehand who is supposed to fight Buddha now & what exactly his true nature is added to the spice.

In S3, I agree that the fights are back to its usual formula but the series seems to be setting up some stuff behind the scenes with this Siegfried fellow & Odin plotting to revive some old gods for some reason. As for where any of this is gonna go & whether it will actually mean something, we can only wait & see when the next season comes out. From what I know, the manga doesn't seem to be that much ahead of the anime so it might be a long time before we get S4.

Isn't that exactly what happened? It's been a top performer for anime on Netflix. It seems more like a reflection of the disconnect between casual anime viewership VS online anime community conversations. People thought it was unpopular simply because it didn't get talked about in such places, but the numbers show the opposite.

Yeah you are probably right. When I think of how widely popular a series, I try to measure it based on how much its being talked about in online discussions & other social media sites but I honestly don't see this series getting talked about at all. That said, S3 didn't really seem like it was doing that well when it came out at least in my region. I dont remember seeing it in the top 10 watched tv shows when I scrolled through netflix back when it released.

It hit as high as #4 over here and the global totals had it more than doubling that week’s Raw episode.

The show is popular for the same reason Baki is popular. Fights. With very eclectic characters. The animation has gotten better even if it’s not perfect but people come for the personality clashes. I imagine this was the first time a lot of Americans learned who Qin Shi Huang was.

I also have to concur getting David Hayter as Leonidas was the best choice they could have made for the character short of bringing back Gerard Butler.

I loved S3.
I think the reviewer was on his phone or entered into auto mode, because yeah, the fights are formulaic but that's every series that haves fights, it can be a traditional shonen, a spokon about the martial arts, a magical girl show, a mecha series, ANYTHING, so this isn't a fair critique. The choreographies were better than ever (including Tesla's CGI suit), the big plot did move (Odin & Sigurd) and some mysteries of previous seasons were addressed (Beel's Hajun stunt).

As the reviewer correctly pointed out the spice are the fighters themselves and I think this as the strongest showing by far. I liked Qin and Beel, I loved Hades, Leonidas and Apollo but my undisputable favorite was Tesla, his motivation wasn't even humanity's survival, it was humanity's progress as if its survival was a given, he had undisputable trust that they will keep moving forward and showed everyone his way of doing so.

I am not exactly the biggest fan of Round 10, but I really want to see Round 11, so I am really looking forward for the inevitable S4.

which was the shock of season three considering that he was rumored to be retired after guns of the patriots aka metal gear solid 4 and haven't really done any voice work since solid snake's final mission! sure he's done VA classes as a guest for steve blum's blumvox studios mastercalsses, but its way different than actual acting!
