You should mention Kokuho being the only JP movie in the mix getting a Makeup nom.

So no anime this year. Not even Demon Slayer? Not surprised but still disappointed.

Same. Just to be clear, I think Kpop deserves the nomination, but there are other nominations that really do not. Elio was tired and boring. I've seen tons of articles talking about why it didn't do well - i have a theory...it sucks. And Arco was pretentious. Not that that's unusual for an Oscar nomination, but who really enjoys movies that hit you over the head with an environmental sermon? Id rather watch Ferngully again and at least be entertained by Tim Curry. |

Yeah, I heard about this announcement/news on my Iphone's notification today, and I'm not surprised by the announcement, and I'm happy to hear about that.

There's been a lot of "I guess there isn't really much to choose from" happening in the film/TV space this past nomination cycle, IMO. I'm personally hoping Kpop, Sinners, and Rental Family get some good recognition. Those were kind of the only notable candidates this time around, but all three are deserving of of serious recognition for various reasons. |

Agreed on on fonts here too. Should be noted that Sinners broke the record for most nominations at 16. Granted one of those nominations is a new category but even then it still broke the old record of 14 (Titanic, La La Land and All About Eve). |

Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man are both sequels in continuing series, so even if the Academy wasn't always snubbing anime, they wouldn't make it in regardless is my guess.
Even so, there was still 100 Meters and Scarlet, the latter of which the Academy would usually be the most receptive to (Hosoda is the only non-Ghibli anime director to get nominated, with Mirai), but from what I've heard it was pretty mediocre. I feel like it's obvious that K-Pop Demon Hunters is getting the win, though Zootopia 2 is possible. |

To be fair, I didn't like Scarlet that much. It was mediocre.

The last and only time an anime movie not from Studio Ghibli got nominated was Mirai in 2018 (a year after A Silent Voice and In This Corner of the World were snubbed in favor of Ferdinand and The Boss Baby, not even The Lego Batman Movie got in that year-The Lego Movie (2014) remains one of the biggest snubs). Studio Ghibli managed nominations only with Spirited Away (2001-won), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), The Wind Rises (2013), The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), When Marnie Was There (2015), The Red Turtle (2016), and The Boy and the Heron (2023-won). They didn't get nominations for The Cat Returns (2003), Tales From Earthsea (2006), Ponyo (2008), The Secret World of Arrietty (2010), From Up On Poppy Hill (2011), and Earwig and the Witch (2020). The chances of an anime movie getting nominated again in the near future given Studio Ghibli's future (Hayao Miyazaki is 85 and losing his eyesight, Isao Takahata passed away at 82 in 2018) is quite low. Best Animated Feature is the category the Academy cares the least about. Those Hollywood Reporter articles showed that, here's snippets that showed up on Cartoon Brew below. https://www.cartoonbrew.com/award-season-focus/definitive-proof-that-academy-voters-are-ignorant-about-animation-96680.html https://www.cartoonbrew.com/award-season-focus/proof-that-oscar-voters-are-clueless-about-animation-109456.html https://www.cartoonbrew.com/ideas-commentary/academy-voters-dont-watch-the-animated-features-they-vote-on-and-the-academy-is-fine-with-that-170670.html https://www.cartoonbrew.com/ideas-commentary/academy-members-dont-care-animation-2017-edition-149087.html It's worth reminding that only 3 animated movies have ever been nominated for Best Picture, Beauty and the Beast (1991-BAF didn't exist yet and BP was 5 nominees, not 10), Up (2009), and Toy Story 3 (2010). There was controversy in 2008 when WALL-E wasn't nominated for Best Picture but won BAF, with people stating BAF exists so animation isn't allowed to compete with live-action, the supposedly inherently superior medium as animation is still often seen as a mindless genre for children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture#Animated_films_in_Best_Picture_category |

Thanks for this information BigOnAnime for all this info. Yeah, I agree that the Oscars aren't really as good as they were in the past and that includes not taking animated films seriously despite the existence and mainstream acceptance of adult animation stuff that has been coming out in the last I think 6 or 7 years.

I just don’t see any appeal to it. Even Sony decided not to release it in theaters because they had no confidence that it would even do well so gave it away to Netflix. Sure it eventually got a short theatrical release just long enough to qualify for these Nominations but there isn’t really anything that stands out to make the movie special.

Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man are sequel films that had no chance of ever making it in and anime fans are always complaining about Demon Slayer being mid otherwise and even the fans of the series all agreed the new movie is just a bunch of episodes strung together. It just feels like people only want Demon Slayer nominated just to have an anime nominated but everyone hates on it all the time otherwise. 100 Meters was fine but other than the impressive rotoscope animation, it was a pretty typical sports manga plot and the ending was anticlimatic. As others have pointed out, Scarlet is an infamously weak film and even most critics and audiences in Japan didn't like it. i want anime to win but we shouldn't pick an anime just for a symbolic win if it's not really that deserving of it and there's plenty of other foreign animation that deserves recognition too like Arco and Little Amelile. Zootopia 2 is a perfectly fine film and probably Disney's most liked movie in recent times. Ellio I'm whatever about but honestly the constant Disney/Pixar bashing during Oscars discourse gets tiring when Disney and Pixar haven't won in like three years.

It will in fact open on IMAX screens in the U.S. February 6 subtitled and then roll out to standard theaters subbed and dubbed a week later. |

Big: I don't think Cat was submitted, though it should have been....Anyway, the reason Ghibli gets in so much is the Oscar voters hate anime, and don't consider Ghibli to be anime. I think the only Miyazaki anime to be denied so far was Ponyo. Unless you wanna count Goro's last outing at Ghibli.
Takato: Turning Red and Inside Out 2 should have won over Pinocchio and Flow. But the animation guilds here are sexist as hell when it comes to honoring women and women directors. I think Persepolis only got in, because of the Iran angle, not the female lead. |

Zootopia 2 and Elio will split the Disney votes, so that increases the chances for Kpop Demon Hunters winning
KPDH Breaks Another Netflix Record As Streamer Releases Biannual Viewership Report: 1.) KPop Demon Hunters - 481,600,000 2.) Happy Gilmore 2 - 135,100,000 3.) Frankenstein - 97.600.000 7 months later, KPDH still has not left Netflix’s Global Top 10 list. Plus, fans kept signing on to sing along to the KPop Demon Hunters Lyric Videos, which separately pulled in 32 million views. Other intriguing figures from the report show that Anime represented over 4% of all viewing in the second half, with audiences enjoying titles like Dan Da Dan Season 2 (17M), My Melody & Kuromi Season 1 (13M), Sakamoto Days Season 1 (12M), Record of Ragnarok Season 3 (11M) and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (11M). New Oscars rules: in order to cast a final-round vote in the Oscars race, Academy members are now required to watch each film nominated in a category. Until now, that was a requirement for nominations in specialty categories, like documentary feature and international feature. But members voting in all other categories have been on the honor system — encouraged, but not required. The Academy now uses a private online streaming service that monitors whether or not its members completed viewing nominated films. Members won't be able to vote unless all nominees in a category have been logged as watched. Otherwise, members will need to submit a form indicating whether they've seen films elsewhere, such as at a film festival or a private event, before they can vote for finalists. |
