R1's biggest mistake is to lose the confidence of the American anime watcher. Weather it be horribly cut up shows, badly voice acted shows, dropped shows in mid run... people have lost faith in the companies... That's gonna be hard to restore in any form.

Wow, 2 respondants managed to get the etymology of Moe incorrect.

This column needs an addendum so other readers don't go and spread the mistake.

”Moe" (pronounced Mo-eh) written 萌え in Kanji, means sprouting or budding. It is not 'to burn' which would have been 燃え which while is also pronounced 'moe', it's not the moe we all use to refer to cute, cuddly, anime characters.

----

R1's biggest mistake? Probably misunderstandings about target audience, and failure to find effective promotional vehicles. Earlier on in R1's history they also butchered their properties to sh*t in an attempt to 'Americanize' them, and thus failing to believe in the quality of the original, and wasting money on localization was also a pretty bad fail.

Moe and love are not synonymous, interchangeable terms. Moe is what you feel as a substitute emotion for love on account of the fact that you're incapable of feeling love because you're an otaku.

It's quite likely someone may read those two sentences and disagree strongly with them. Should that person be thinking of typing out a "no, you're WRONG!" post as a result, I am compelled to point out that the reason you disagree is simply because you know not what evil lurks in the hearts of manchild, as you have not seen that evil within your own heart. Therefore, you cannot truly understand. Pray that you never do.

Biggest mistake? Agreeing to pay mainstream license fees for a niche product that's already available for free to the target audience.

While maybe not the biggest mistake, this however does add the straw that breaks the camels back. That being the staggered release of dvds. Fans of anything are not usually the best at playing the waiting game.
So when given the option of waiting every 2 months for only three or four episodes or just grabbing the entire series in a matter of a night or two (depending on ones internet)......I think most would prefer to just grab the whole thing at once. Of course it is not really possible for R1 to have an entire series available ASAP, but they could cut down on the two month wait. Some companies tried releasing volumes every month and it seemed to be a popular choice, however they don't seem to do that anymore.
I really do feel that the average fan would like it better if a series was delayed release in the US for a month or two if that would mean less time between volume releases.

Well, I haven't read the thread but......

Just joking, please don't automatically ban me for a week. I'll be a good little boy...

Must I pick just one mistake? Alright, I believe that the biggest problem they have made for themselves is: ignoring the possibilities of the Internet. Why has it taken this long to get ANNTV up and running? I don't blame ANN itself, more like the short-sighted people in the R1 industry. They should have been hooking us early onto a system of legal Anime downloads, either for free (with advertising), a small subscription charge, or pay-for-view. I haven't heard about a single thing they did to counter Crunchyroll, or the rocketing use of YouTube. Let's not forget fansubs. If someone can provide an example of what steps the R1 industry took in limiting the damage these factors caused, I'll be happy to hear it.

It just seems like the dangers - and benefits - of the Internet were ignored for too long. There's that old motto the tobacco companies used to use (and probably still do on the sly), and that is "Get them early, and you get them for life"*. Many fans have "grown up"** with digital fansubs, or have used them for so long, that I question how many will switch over to any R1 industry-originated project.

I just feel that there was this huge surge in fandom when those who grew up with the likes of Pokemon, Dragonball Z and Cardcaptors became older. They started to want better titles, true Anime rather than butchered "cartoons". But they didn't exactly have much disposable income. And where could those savvy youngsters find cheap Anime online? Not from the very companies whose business it was to cater for those fans. So the fans went elsewhere.

That group of fandom are now reaching their majority, getting part-time jobs and a bit of disposable income. They have also reached the magical 18-49 bracket favoured by advertisers. And assuming they are still fans, where do most of them get their Anime from? Not from a store on an expensive, decade-old, near-obsolete piece of technology, I would argue. They just do not feel any loyalty towards R1 licensors, who couldn't be bothered to adjust their business model to those fans.

For every person like myself, who by age twenty had spent more than USD6000 of his hard-earned cash on legitimate Anime, there are probably ten such fans who do not.

Anyway, I have got more to say, but it will have to come later.

*May have paraphrased that, but the sentiment is clearly understood.

**As in, became a fan after digital fansubs started up, irrespective of their actual age.

I was just getting ready to rant on the mistakes of R1 and R2 (R2 is japan right?) but i'll get to it here.

They failed to realize the money they had at their very finger tips. If the companies had started a legal subbed distribution system of the heavy hitters; Bleach, One Piece, Naruto they'd be rolling in it right now. hell, even if they tried to do that now, they'd be rolling in it.

But they're too scared to break out of the old system. People no longer want to wait the years in-between. It was nice before when there was no alternative. There is now. instead of wasting money trying to prosecute one person out a millions, why not make the system happen?

it just seems like both sides put their energies in the wrong place.

Well...except Funimation.

Yes, but that happened much longer than just "a few years ago." Wink

Can't think of too many examples of these "butchered and Americanized" anime this century that wasn't 4kids.

Biggest mistake of the R1 industry? Eh, I can't really blame them for any problems, since most of those problems seem to come from the Japanese companies that are calling the shots.

I've made a few people feel moe for me, and I'm even really trying. It's a natural gift.

RI' biggest mistake? I don't know, or know where to start.
Anime fan's interest cover a huge grounds. It's spread out on so many levels and it's difficult for so few RI people to cover and quickly understand how it functions.
It's a business issue so looking at what works and what falters is a good place to start.

Simple:

NA-RU-TO

Really though ... probably the destroying of shows. (Vague much?)

1) Editing and dubbing of shows:
So many shows i have seen go down the drain due to either a bad dubbing cast or an bad editing class. Like for example Eyeshield 21 anime.
Don't get me wrong, I actually watch the dub versions over the Japanese one but sometimes you just want to murder the people. It is most horrible to hear them make a character who is 12 have a deep, 25 voice.

2) Lack of advertising:
If someone wants to sell a product then they might as well advertise. I mean if I go on to a website like VIZ for example. There pops up Naruto and Bleach. I know they are famous but that is it. They are ALREADY famous. They don't need ads for them. If someone wanted information all they have to do is walk up to the nearest anime/manga fan and say, "I heard about Naruto ..." , or actually go into a comic shop and see it everywhere. I pretty sure no one can miss the big piles. Plus it is on television and etc.
I might just make my point now:
"If you are going to try and make a profit out of "unpopular" products you advertise them instead of trying to shove something someone already knows in their face"

Well that is what i think anyway, as so many manga/anime don't get the respect they should *cough* Togari *cough*
