I would literally kill for some more animated GitS TV, because I do love me some Ghost in the Shell. Now, if only they'd have the Major stick closer to her manga roots, i.e. her bisexuality... Too many long glances and pregnant silences between her and the Prime Minister *wink, wink, nudge, nudge, Say no more!*
The book sounds good, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for some more pretty moving pictures. |

As it turns out Carey, I just wrote this web article on the Oshii Ghost in the Shell films as a supplement to a feature story I wrote in the latest issue of Otaku USA magazine on the Kamiyama Ghost in the Shell films, and answering the question of "why isn't there more of this made?" is something for which I repeatedly speculate. I feel that my speculations aren't particularly far from the mark, given the direct quotations by Production IG founder Mitsuhisa Ishikawa on the subject.
Fans of Oshii interested in discerning how his outlook on the property has changed over the years would be interested to know there is a short interview conducted with both him and the author of the novel included at the end here. |

I hadn't realized quite how far Oshii had traveled down the George Lucas rabbit hole--great article. And I had absolutely no clue about the love robot issue. Wow... just, wow. GitS is taking on a whole 'nother level of meaning. I really wish more smart and engaging product like this was being made, especially if it (GitS) wasn't up its own ass most of the time or require a few years of graduate-level study in philosophy and existentialism to follow/understand. I can appreciate -and I relish- intelligent writing, but... My reptile brain likes the ladies and things that go boom. If I were the sultan of an oil-rich country, or Forbes billionaire I'd finance this series, and others like it, myself. |

I am in the apparent minority of people who loved Innocence, despite not having nearly the requisite background in philosophy to catch all of its allusions - mainly because I felt that, despite its truly far-out dialogue, I found it to ironically be the most grounded of all his films, with Batou providing an empathetic lead character and a strong emotional core that his other films, for all their beauty and, perhaps, greater coherence and structure, lack. The first film, excellent as it was, was pretty difficult, if not impossible, to relate to on an emotional level - not too many of us have had to struggle with the issues of personal identity that come with being a government-owned full-prosthetic cyborg. Lost love, alienation, and the feeling of being overwhelmed by a world of technology, however - those are all things that many of us can relate to, and they provide a personal grounding for all the film's ponderous, philosophical wackiness (not to mention gorgeous imagery and breathtaking action sequences) that really make it stand out for me among the Oshii library.
Anyway, I've been curious about this novel for ages, but knowing that it was not written by anyone involved with either of the films I've been somewhat hesitant to sink in for it. If someone who's as much of an Oshii fanboy as Brian (no offense, Brian) can give it a wholehearted recommendation, I'll definitely have to give it a shot. Also, I agree that the new cover design pales is terrible, especially compared to the older version. @AWO: In your article you speculate that perhaps Oshii "has just gone completely crazy". I posit that Oshii has always been nucking futs, and we wouldn't want it any other way. |

The Ghost In The Shell universe is one of my most favourite to visit, whether it be through the GITS and GITS 2: Innocence movies by Oshii, the SAC anime series and SSS movie or the SAC novels, or the original mangas by Shirow. So many ideas are presented as being plausible given a few more years of technological development, especially the ultimate interface with machines and what will serve as the future net.
I picked up After The Long Goodbye when it was first released not knowing anything about it, other than that it expanded, in some way, the GITS world. I still haven't read it yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to it even more so after reading Brian's column. I have to say that I, too, wasn't very enamoured with the cover of After The Long Goodbye used for the N.A. release, but at least it contained some graphics of Batou and Gabriel within it. I very much enjoyed this weeks column of Brain Diving. Thanks, Brian. |
