About 1 million viewers in Japan and Taiwan watched as the entire Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica anime series streamed live from 7:00 p.m. on June 18 to 1:00 a.m. on June 19. Nico Nico Douga, a Japanese video streaming site, ran all 12 episodes of the television anime series in a live streaming broadcast last Saturday. This viewership number is a record for a live broadcast of an entire anime series on Nico Nico Douga. The usual audience for this type of streaming event is about 100,000 viewers.
By June 21, over 1,860,000 user comments appeared on the site's real-time commenting service connected with these videos. Starting 30 minutes before the episodes began streaming, users began flooding the site and commenting in anticipation of the broadcast. After the live streaming ended, many users praised the series and expressed how the show deeply impacted them.
This broadcast surpasses the 570,000 member audience viewing Lucky Star for New Year's on the site and 520,000 that tuned in for the streaming of the popular series Bakemonogatari.
