And now he's searching for Odin!
The man with a perchance of making anime about seagoing vessels that could travel thru space (Yamato, Blue Noah, Odin) and gave us the first taste of erotic/grotesque with Urotsukidoji has passed away, Love Him or hate Him, he was a man with a Vision and many fans across the world embraced anime because of Yamato (I was one of them, in it's Spanish dub "Nave Espacial"), one of the best Space Operas anime has manage to create, too bad Space Opera and Sci-Fi appears as a dying breed in anime. RIP The Nish!!! |

May he rest in peace. It is inherently tragic that his death was accidental in the first place, but at the very least the man lived a full lifespan and was able to influence many people in Japan and abroad through his work on Space Battleship Yamato.

Mr. Sick,
THAT is the understatement of the day! Dying after falling off a ship named after the battleship your anime was inspired by...! A sleazy tabloid couldn't come up with something more ironic.. RIP, Nishizaki. RIP, Yamato anime productions until the next guy gets ahold of the property and tries to market it better. As if that horse hasn't been beat to death enough times. Goodness knows the closest thing to new Yamato that's made it out of Japan in years have been the Matsumato Harlock OVAs and parodies in other anime... |

The creator of Yamato dying on a ship named the Yamato is definitely ironic...in an Alanis Morissette sort of way (not by the proper definition of irony though).
I loved Yamato. He will be missed. |

Wow, I had just finished watching the Yamato Revival movie, and now I find out the main creative force behind it died.
People may primarily associate Yamato to Leiji Matsumoto, but it was Nishizaki who shepherded the franchise through the decades. I wonder if the second Revival movie that had been planned will ever be made now. May he rest in peace, among the stars. |

If you haven't heard it, listen to the Anime World Order podcast episode 64 and 64b (especially the former around 43:10 and the latter around 32:00), the interview with Rob Fenelon and myself, which includes a discussion of the work of Nishizaki and Rob's personal interaction with him in the 80s and 90s.
Did you know that in addition to Yamato, Nish made a fortune by importing the "Wacky Races" cartoon to Japan? Yes, the one with Penelope Pitstop, Dick Dastardly and Muttley, etc. Was insanely popular and led to the spate of anime parody reels from the 90s where every show did a joke race episode extra. And Cyber Formula, the big racing anime from the 90s, was sold not as a new "Mach Go Go Go" (aka Speed Racer), but as a Japanese "Wacky Races"... R.I.P Yoshinobu Nishizaki I'm seeing a grim trend with the recent increase of anime greats passing away...it's been a very sad year for the industry indeed. |
