The nominations come in tomorrow morning, so let's all gather round the fire and let the film dorks inside of us do some predictin'! Feel free to add your own, and hey, once the nominations are announced, we can discuss those.
My thoughts:
Chicago is the clear frontrunner, and will have nominations out the wazoola. It'll be nominated for categories not even invented yet, like "Best Use of a Handkerchief in a Dance Number" and "Best Lighting Techniques for Renee Zellweger's Hair." Roman Polanski's The Pianist seems to be the underdog favorite, despite poor B.O. performance. The Two Towers should get every technical award, maybe a supporting actor nomination for one of the cast members (Viggo Mortensen? Andy Serkis?), but nothing else. The Hours is probably the, er, second-runner behind Chicaco, and will recieve acting nominations for almost everybody involved, while Gangs of New York is the, uh, third-runner relying mostly upon Scorcese.
After that, its anyone's guess, honestly. I'm rooting for Adaptation, personally, but its just as likely that something like About Schmidt or Far From Heaven could take it's place.
Some people have predicted My Big Fat Greek Wedding to pick up a surprise Best Picture nomination. I wish for those people to die.
Now, c'mon folks! Get up and dance!

I really hope LoTR wins something. It keeps getting gyped at all the award shows. I think Andy Serkis should get a supporting actor nod, cause I mean really. How many people can pull off what he did? The physical acting, the voice acting, arguing with himself, diving into freezing water? Yeah I watched the special on the WB! And what??
We haven't really gone to the movies lately, so...I got nothin

My personal pick for best picture is Roman Polanski's The Pianist. It simply stunned me when I saw it and I still remember many scenes quite vividly Still, I'm quite doubtful given the somewhat suprisingly poor ticket sales (insert juvenile rant about the stupidity and shallowness of American audiences here for your own amusement). Adaptation was very good, and I particularly sympathized with the main character (I even dress like him...swooky), but it just doesn't feel like a best picture winner, not that it unworthy, but that it just doesn't seem likely to be picked. About Schmidt was a good film, but I think Nicholson's performance was more remarkable than the movie itself. I haven't seen Chicago, and I just don't think I'd like it. Gangs of New York was interesting, but I found it to be overrated. The Two Towers was more than solid, but the middle of a story just doesn't deserve best picture (I'll wait for Return of the King). Most relevant to this board, however, is Miyazaki's Spirited Away getting the animation Oscar, I think it deserves it, but I'm a little shaky on whether or not it will win (no evidence, just a slight sense of forboding).
Of course this is all academic, everybody knows Kangaroo Jack is going to clean house.

Deltha: Sorry, but if all Polanski ended up doing after surviving the Holocaust is f*ck 13 year old girls, then he doesn't deserve to win sh*t. The fact that these Hollywood people even PRODUCE movies about genocide, just to win Academy Awards is repulsive enough. (In fact, I was considering writing and directing an indie film called, "Not Another Holocaust Movie".) At least Max had the balls not to fall into the same trap.

Well, I am glad to at least see Spirited Away under the Best Animated Picture category. Should we make any hopes that it'll win though?

It doesn't matter if it wins now. Them showing it on national tv will be promotion enough for it. Of course winning would be icing on the cake.

Ugh, GATSU, I'm not going to even respond to that, except to say that the thing that happened with Polanski ended a long time ago when the girl it happened with officially forgave him for it. It only happened once. You can't damn a man for the rest of his life after one big mistake.
Anyway, I read the Oscar noms, and it's a shame that LOTR was nominated and Adaptation wasn't. Having seen everything else nominated, I have to say at this point, I hope Chicago wins. It's the best film up there. The Hours was good, and while I won't sit here and claim "middlebrow psuedo-intellectualism!" like every other critic on the face of the planet, Chicago was a better film. Pianist was a good holocaust portrait but as a portrait film, it doesn't have much solid meaning behind it, aside from the whole "war has many sides" thing. Gangs of New York was a great epic film but ultimately very flawed. I wanted Adaptation to win.. looks like that isn't going to happen now, so I'll be rooting for Chicago. LOTR isn't going to win anything. Jackson wasn't nominated as director and the film doesn't have anything on the other films nominated. I refuse to believe that the middle of LOTR (since the film narratively has no beginning and no end) is better than the other films nominated.

Of course she forgave him. Girls who are raped always forgive their assaulter, because they don't know any better.
"It only happened once. You can't damn a man for the rest of his life after one big mistake."
Hey Hitler! Let bygones be bygones! But seriously, if this was some guy off the street who didn't know any better, I'd give him a chance. But I don't really care about rich Hollywood people who try to use their positions to get away with the law.
Anyway, my other questions for Spirited Away are: 1)Will Miyazaki be attending the show? and 2) Will the clips presented during the nomination process be in English or Japanese?

Chances are they will be in the English dub. And if Miyazaki does show up, does that mean the chances of Spirited Away winning are pretty good? We all know that the winners are probably announced before the Oscars, after all most of the winners are seated near the aisle. I think I've only seen once when they weren't, and that was just to let Bernini(sp?) do the comical thing and go to the stage by going literally over the rows ahead of him. But then again I haven't seen too many of the Oscars presentations. I usually just hear about them the next day.

Woohoo! Lilo & Stitch got a nod! I'll be rooting for that one for Best Animated Feature! And the best part of it all is that I get to change the channel after the BAF award is given since neither About Schmidt nor Adaptation got a Best Pic nod and, while I liked The Two Towers (though not nearly as much as I liked Adaptation or About Schmidt), I'm not sitting through hours and hours of boring tributes to see it lose.
Also, even if Spirited Away does win, all it would mean would be that most non-animation fans in North America wouldn't be able to tell you who won the "Shrek award" in 2003 or they'll think it was Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

I think I might have to agree with you on the last note about Spirited Away, but it would still be cool for those of us who are animation fans is it won.

Polanski didn't rape anyone, GATSU, get your facts straight. He slept with a 13 year old girl. Yes, that's statutory, but she agreed to it. No rape occurred. Yeesh. I'm not defending what the man did, but judge his films on their own merits, not on how the director screwed up some 30 years ago.
