I don't really think theres a double standered, its just the differance in the two countries styles of storytelling. Anime is controversial because, well alot of the violence & sensuality is overt and shoved in the viewers face, american & europian animations take a more subtle, refined & less "hey look at this" approach to that type of content.

I mean yeah violence & sensuality are present in U.S. animation, but outside of animted Sitcoms aimed at older viewers, they really arn't shoved down are throats like they are in many anime series.

that is to say, we don't really have to worry about constant cleavage & Panty shots, or alot of blood in the majority in U.S. animations, lol.

Well when there is almost no middle ground between animation for kids and animation for adults in Western shows it is easier to know where sexual innuendo and violence will pop-up. Turn on Nick or Anime hyper before 10pm and you get easy going silly crap with characters that most of the time are anthropomorphized creatures that don't technically have breasts or any sexual features, they are generally shown without various articles of clothing. Turn on Cartoon Network and Comedy Central after 10pm(or Fox anytime) and be prepared for enough gay, breasts, and poop jokes to last you a life time. Quick example; remember all the bitching about Panty and Stocking for having a semen episode even though it was full of social commentary but Family Guy's semen episodes never garnered the same reaction.

Yes people are hypocrites and hold anime to different standards when compared to all the dreck found in Western animation. OFC there will be more examples of content that could be found in anime simply because there is more anime being made season after season for mixed audiences.

That was pretty much what I was saying. While I haven't seen the particular series you just brought up, I would like to say that one thing with most anime productions is that they were intended to be a television show as opposed to animated television show. I mean to say that they were supposed to be treated like any other television program regardless of the medium it was made in.

To be fair, it seems a lot of people missed the entire point of Panty & Stocking. Both those who praise it and those who bash it.

I'm just bringing this topic up because I can't stand the view that anime must equal little kids. Who made that definition is the question I'd like to ask.

Well, technically Naruto and Dragonball are for kids. It's just what flies in a kids show in Japan is hugely different than in America. If you mean anime as a whole, then that's just the way it's been for animation in the West in general. Well, television in general. Back in the old days, it was considered controversial to show a married couple sleeping in the same bed. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo had to sleep in separate beds despite being a married couple. Televsion was very limited in it's early days, especially when it came to kids. And that kind of censorship has lightened up over the years, but it's still there. When Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) first aired on American TV, it was pretty heavily butchered (like, probably worse than 4Kids levels) that even Osamu Tezuka criticized the way American television standards were compared to Japan's when he saw the edited version of his show. But where as live-action has managed to break free from some of those things, animation is still stuck inside the censorship bubble since it's always been seen as 'for kids'. There's nothing anyone can do to really change the view of an entire culture.

Note: Sorry for the long post. Just a lot I need to say in order to explain myself because to me this is something that should be dealt with.

I don't know what other people think, but personally I believe there is a double standard in our society when it involves the content of japanese and western animation. For example, a few anime shows that I have watched made lots of edits because their were guns, alcoholic beverages, sexual innuendo, onscreen fighting, blood, and death. Obviously these edits are due to concerned parents since they deem these topics "mature" for their children.

....

Gotta love PTA and people like Jack Thompson right? They know what's best right lol?

Could say more, but then I'd be dissing my mom. Anyway nah they are good people with good intentions. Just let them be. Kids don't listen anyway. Gives parents the lame excuse and ability to say, "Oh, well we did something!!! Don't tell me I suck at parenting!!!"- yeah you do.
Anyway, there is not really a bias. East/West anime are completely different. Similarly to what EricDent said, Japan is in your face and America is subtle. For example:

1. Japan will show tits and then you'll know it's happy happy fun time.

2. America will not show tits, but they'll hold hands at a park. Then you'll know it's happy happy fun time.

Of the two ways of depicting sexual attraction, which do you think is more appropriate?

.......Times up. Since you picked 2, well then you know the answer to your question and why double standards exist. Wrong word to use btw. Just google "define anime" and look at the 1st search result. I'll do it for you- Google Search: Anime That is certainly not The Incredibles. That was the nice definition too. Right clicking the word anime in MS Word 2007 is worse.

Technically everything is for kids if you are as old as Methuselah but generally speaking animated shows that are intended for kids are tagged as 'kodomo' not 'shonen'. None of the violent and genocidal content in DB or Naruto would be able to work in a children's anime.

But society must move on and grow up. Has locking oneself in a bubble ever proved to be effective or helpful? And we can do something we can do to change the view of people. It won't happen overnight, but we can start the gradual change today.

It depends on what sort of story is being told, the characters involved and how the story is being told. A story-teller could make either one work if they wished.

As an aside, the occasional story will go for a third option and show happy happy fun time actually happening on-screen, like the "Gantz" anime, which actually worked for that show - all of the violence, perversion and sadism of the various characters was uncensored in that show, there was no reason why the sex should not have been either - I'm glad that that producers thought so too.

How do these works of animation get away while anime is immediately attacked if it depicts the same thing? The only differences between the two are the origins of the two works. One is from the West while the other is from Japan. Therefore, wouldn't that mean cultural bias/xenophobic feelings make the basis of editing cartoons?

Yes there's a whole plot aimed to eradicate anime. The highest authorises united to spread false rumors about it. Freemasonry and Opus Dei included.

Seriously- show me one anime where similar mature themes were "edited" by bloodthirsty western capitalists. By "mature" I mean themes shown in similar way to examples above. Gore and pointless nudity not included.

BTW I wonder if any of those cartoons would be shown today without heavy changes.

The only recent example of animation being criticized for its content (that I know of)was on the conservative site newsbusters. And it was just about how immoral adult swim is. But the good thing is that a majority of the comments disagree with the author. So there is hope for the animation is just for kids thing going away.

Two seconds of books didn't bother anyone under 12. The 10 Plagues and "Hellfire" did it. The whole subtext of "Hunchback..." and "Prince of Egypt" was overloaded with heavy emotions and scary scenes with heavy religious message. Do you think that now anybody would make something like this targeted to children?

What are you talking about? Where have you seen anime attacked for including similar subject matter? I think you're building a persecution complex for yourself.
