So what manga are people reading? I've been reading more and more lately. To get a discussion going, here's a list of some of the stuff I've recently read & enjoyed:

  • SUPER MANGA BLAST! - Dark Horse's manga anthology. Generally features 5 serials per issue. Some are a bit too ethereally "sci-fi" for me (APPLESEED, SERAPHIC FEATHER), but even then the art's always top-notch. My favorite series here are probably WHAT'S MICHAEL (humorous cat strips) and CLUB 9 (small town girl's adventures in the big city), both by Makoto Kobayashi.
  • RAIJIN COMICS - The weekly manga anthology from Gutsoon. Each issue is over 200 pages and there are several series in each issue. Genres are pretty diverse, from sports/romance (SLAM DUNK) to political fiction (FIRST PRESIDENT OF JAPAN).
  • SHONEN JUMP - Viz's monthly anthology. This has been getting mainstream press for being such a (relatively) hot seller. I think the first issue moved around 300K copies. Younger kids will probably really like this anthology, since it features characters they're familiar with from cartoons (YU-GI-OH, DRAGONBALL Z, etc.) But if my experience is any indicator, adults can enjoy this anthology too!
  • OH MY GODDESS! - This is one of my favorite manga - it's very light-hearted & fun, and I love the art. It's usually described as a "fantasy/romantic comedy" but at least from my perspective, the romance angle is generally pretty small. I'd describe it more as slice-of-life meets the fantastic.
  • UZUMAKI - One of the best (i.e., most frightening) horror series I've ever read - truly disturbing, with beautiful artwork. An entire village falls victim to the curse of "the spiral."
  • AKIRA - So far I've only read the first volume (out of six), but I was thoroughly engrossed in the artwork. I'll probably go back and re-read it just to get a better feel for the story before I order the second volume.
  • ONEGAI TEACHER - Just read this one last week. A very "screwball" romantic comedy where a student ends up marrying his new teacher in order to protect her secret: She's an alien! I'm just waiting for Hollywood to pick this up and turn it into the latest teen sex comedy.

And lest people think I roll over and give a thumbs up to everything manga, there have also been a couple books that fell flat for me:
  • CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON - Pre-ordered the first two books in this series and it really does nothing for me. The color artwork is impressive, but the story seems flat and unmoving.
  • ORION - This book felt completely incomprehensible and impenetrable to me. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think I've really enjoyed any of Masamune Shirow's work: GHOST IN THE SHELL - although an interesting anime - was a fairly dull manga. APPLESEED is my least favorite serial in SMB. And ORION, although visually interesting, was very hard for me to get through. Shirow has an odd habit of focussing on (I'm assuming) made-up technological/metaphysical details, to the detriment of the overall story. He often writes long "footnotes" about some throwaway term alongside panels, and he generally concludes his books with long appendices about the philosophical/technological/metaphysical system he's invented for the story. It's like wonky fiction for those who enjoy reading about another person's elaborately constructed poetic-philosophic system.

So how about it - What manga are YOU reading?

Of course I'm picking up the new Ghost in the Shell series....great stuff so far. At the moment the only other manga series I'm picking up monthly is Silent Mobius. I love Kia Asamiya's artwork.

With the recent manga explosion here in the US I'm disappointed Rurouni Kenshin and Hellsing haven't been licensed yet. I'd sell my grandmother for English versions of those books!

I debated whether I should get GITS2 as it came out issue-by-issue, but in the end I decided to wait for the collection. Even though I find Shirow's technobabble wonky, I know I'll still end up buying it for the art.

I keep hearing people wishing for Rurouni Kenshin to be translated. If it's ever published in English, I'll have to check it out. Is this the series that Shonen Jump profiled in their first "Manga Explorer" column? (will have to check at home tonight)

I haven't read anything by Kia Asamiya, but I've been hearing good things about his BATMAN: CHILD OF DREAMS series that DC just published in hardcover. Might pick this up off Amazon.

Yes it is. Once SandLand ends it's run in Shonen Jump (it's only 14 chapters) I bet they'll start a new series. I'm hoping it's Kenshin.

I've been reading Love Hina (I need to get vol. 9), Real Bout High School, Dragon Ball and Shonen Jump. It seems like they all come out way too slowly, Real Bout is released about every 4 months lately, same with Dragon Ball. Shonen Jump is monthly, which seems like a really bad idea to me, because we're already a few hundred chapters behind the Japanese Jump, and by going slower than them we'll only get farther and farther behind.

Yeah, I never thought a monthly comic would seem too slow (esp. with all the ones I read), but it seems like FOREVER since Shonen Jump #3 came out. The gap between issues seems especially pronounced when you're also a RAIJIN COMICS reader and get used to getting your fix weekly.

Just got Miho Obana's "Partner", vols. 1-3.. .she's the cwazy gal who did Kodocha and the like.

Haven't started reading it yet, but from a brief skim it looks pretty serious.. it's about a pair of twin girls, and one of the twins dies... but then her corpse is stolen, and a few days later they see her on the street again...

... pretty creepy stuff.. but, like i said, i only just skimmed through it quickly to see what it's about. ^^;

Let's see. I have been reading Lupin III novels, and I'm starting to get in to Di Gi Chart and Wave Master. I guess I'm some of the lucky people to get the first 2 issues of Ghost in the Shell 2: MMI. Now to keep them in mint condition. *L* Any hoot, I hope Viz releases Naruto in a Graphic Novel format (What am I saying. Razz)

List? Well here's how it goes.

MARS: I love it to death. Incredibly beautiful, deep characters, and a story that never stops turning. I don't care how much "shoujo-guy" flak I catch from my friends. I love this series.

Onegai Teacher: Proof that I'm not shoujo obsessed. Yet it's still romantic enough that I fully enjoy it.

X/1999: The TV series forced me to dust off my friend's copies. It's still incredible.

Chobits: Funny and touching, I'd say it's on the same blurry "shonen or shoujo" line that Oh! My Goddess has always lived on.

Over Rev: Found translations on the web and like it as much as Initial D. Same sort of concept, only it's the dockside scene as opposed to the mountains, and the main characters are women drawn in a style reminiscent of CLAMP.

There's plenty of others, but these are at the top of the list right now. Funny, MARS is a higher priority than Initial D to me, and I'm a racer.

Of course they will, but they're releasing it so slowly I bet it'll be 2004 before the first one is out. Since the fansubs of the anime are coming out faster than Shonen Jump, I've been watching those. I'm up to episode 22, which is the newest one released.

I read way more manga than I watch anime-maybe I'm weird that way. Anyways, what I own/read/have read (in no particular order)-
Fushigi Yugi
Inuyasha
Magic Knight Rayearth
X/1999
Clover
Card Captor Sakura
Wish
Angelic Layer
Tokyo Babylon
(or otherwise, almost anything CLAMP)
Mars
Paradise Kiss
Peach Girl (eh...it's okay)
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Gravitation
Petshop of Horrors
D.N.Angel (only read a bit of it, it looks kinda interesting)
Various other stuff that I've probably forgotten
My favorites, though, are probably Paradise Kiss (I love the clothing designs), Inuyasha, and Tokyo Babylon (stateside release, anyone?!)

Ummm... not counting series which have ended (ie Wish, GSC). If I can remember em all:

Angelic Layer
Bastard
Cardcaptor Sakura
Ceres
Chobits
El Hazard
Gatekeepers
Geobreeders
Ghost In The Shell
Inu-Yasha
I.N.V.U
Kodacha
Love Hina
Marmalade Boy
Peach Girl
Ranma 1/2
Real Bout High School
Shonen Jump
Super Manga Blast
Tenchi Muyo!

The list of completed series (or series I stopped getting for now) is equally as long I think.

I make sure to get MARS and GTO once I know they're going to be released that week. I love high-school based manga (heaven knows why, I hated high school) -- and these two are so different from each other, yet both so good in their own respective ways.

And of course, the prerequisite CLAMP titles. I do wish Viz would release X on a quicker schedule. It's hard to keep the angst level when I have to wait almost three months between releases.
