Ok so I've been following the Kamisama no Memo-chou series and in the latest episode there was an unexpected yet rather symbolic scene where Ayaka commits suicide this came quite suddenly and actually tore me up a little as i thought she was quite a decent character, so this got me thinking what are the best horribly brutal yet somehow beautiful scenes in anime?
Shuffle when Rin slits his wrists in order to force Asa to heal him and save her
[EDIT: Corrected spelling on the thread title. - Key]

Huh, this is actually a pretty interesting topic, and one that I've thought about quite a bit in the past.
However, you might want to clarify what you mean by beautiful. Do you mean the technical aspects of the scene, or are you talking more about the symbolism and how it fits into the themes of the series?
For the first type, I'd nominate just about anything by SHAFT. Shinbo has an enormous talent for taking horrifying scenes and animating them with such creativity that they become absolutely gorgeous in a morbid way. I still vividly remember the scene in Bakemonogatari where Suruga is swinging Araragi around by his entrails, his blood flashing from yellow to turquoise to bubble-gum pink, all against a stark white background. It's a scene with that would make any modern artist proud.
Madoka Magica has its fair share of such scenes as well. There's too many to describe in detail, but the scene in episode 5 where Madoka is torn apart inside the witch's realm, Sayaka's act of manic violence against a stark black and white background in episode 7, and many, many scenes from episode 10 and beyond all qualify.

I'll nominate episode seven of Kemono no Sou-ja Erin wherein Erin's mother is executed by feeding her to the touda. The two of them swim together as the beasts close in, then the mother tells Erin she must swim away.. In my mind this is one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in recent anime, and it's beautifully animated by Production I.G to boot.

The finale of Kara no Kyoukai movie 3, when Shiki and Fujino fight on the bridge, Fujino destroys the bridge, and is dying in the rubble before Shiki, arm torn apart from the fight, comes back and saves her. Several other examples in KnK, but that scene always springs to mind as one of the most powerful in KnK.

That scene in episode 7 is even more impressive in the bluray version.

This is an anime I've been meaning to watch fully for a while u just gave me the drive to =p
symbolism and how it fits into the themes,
actually remember another one, one of the best of all time in many ways which is Berserk the very last episode where they are in the Demon realm sacrificing themselves in an attempt to save Casca, the most vivid being when Guts cuts his own arm off with a broken sword when its trapped in he mouth of a demon.[/spoiler]

Ditto. The scene is very beautiful, and very tragic at the same time, and accompanied by a the opening theme, which fits in so well. It is heartbreaking to see Erin desperately trying to save her mother, and the mother having to send the girl away before being eaten alive, and the pain of her friend watching over the execution.

Several different scenes from different anime popped into my head when I read this, but the one that really stands out is from Princess Tutu. At the end when she gives up her necklace and turns into a duck and is dancing but at the same time being shoved and trampled by the people turned into crows.... that practically broke my heart. =( Absolutely beautiful how they portray Duck being beaten while all the characters still adhere to the theme of ballet.

Julia's final scene in Cowboy Beebop would get my vote.

Oh man, there are two scenes from ef-A Tale of Melodies that I have to include.
The first being when Yuko meets Yuu in the church and shows him her naked body and all of the scars and abuse she's taken from her older brother over the years Yuu and Yuko were separated. That was a tough one to swallow. I am a strong believer in that a woman shouldn't be touched, let alone abused or tortured and that scene just tormented me.
The second being when Yuko got hit by that car while waiting for Yuu and Mizuki to get back. It tore me up inside when she was leaning against the tree waiting to die, saying how she regretted not being able to say her final goodbye to Yuu and started to sing before passing on into death. When Yuu and Mizuki discover her dead body was absolutely tormenting as well.
Angel Beats had several scenes that had me at a wreck. A lot of brutal, yet beautiful scenes in that one. Too many to count...

Last Exile's weird dance fight. Cowboy Bebop church gunfight are some I think. Of course your mileage may vary depending on how much violence you think is needed.
I think the last episode of Basilisk is a classic example. When Gennosuke stabs himselfs and lets the river carry his and Oboros body away.

Loved them both. For me in that dance fight Last Exile suddenly transcended its limitations. I was mesmerised.

Basilisk had a few scene of that sort. Another one I can think of is Hotarubi's death, when Saemon cuts her hands off, she falls off the enge of the mountain and then a swarm of butterflies appears, with a pair of them symbolising Hotarubi and Yashamaru reuniting.

Let's not forget the scene in End of Evangelion where Asuka
battles and is killed by the Mass Production Evas.
It is the king of brutal yet beautiful scenes imo.

Kino's Journey, episode 4
The young heroine is almost stabbed by her father, being saved at the last minute by Kino stepping in the way. She stands dazed watching her father pull the knife free when Hermes urges her to hop on and escape.Watching her go from shock to despair to resolve as she breaks free from the town still gives me chills

From Eureka 7 (I just rewatched it) - Ray's death. I never liked her character until they revealed her past and why she hated Eureka so much. The last scene of the episode where she attacks Gekko, shows Ray crawling to find her severed arm with her wedding ring on it, and only calms down after finding it before her ship explodes. It was heartbreaking. Creepy at the same time, but shows how much she and Charles were in love more than anything we have seen in the previous episodes. It changed my perception of her totally...
