So has there been any manga that give you a bad impression at first but later really like it or at least appreciate it. It could also be that the story start off really bad but get a lot better later on, or a certain artwork you didn't like at first but now you love.

I love stories like these because sometimes it takes a little push and motivation to get people to open their eyes. Cool

Despite everyone's love for it, I didn't really like Rurouni Kenshin until around volume 7 or so when it started to hit the Kyoto arc. Before that, I just collected it listlessly because I didn't like the direction (or lack thereof) the story was taking. The stories seemed too disconnected, and a bigger plot was barely hinted at. But once Shishio appeared and the story assumed form, I really got into it. Very Happy

Now, I only wonder if the same thing will happen to me with Getbackers and Kare Kano? Everyone sings their praises, but I couldn't get past volume 4 for either... Confused

Hmm.. Well, if you're waiting for a big plot to pull you in, GetBackers has the MakubeX plot which starts in late volume five, but if it weren't for the anime I have a feeling I wouldn't like the manga series too much either. KareKano... I guess that's just a personal preference. Most people like it because they can identify with the characters.

As far as change of heart? Bleach was one of those titles. I had borrowed nearly thirty or forty volumes from a friend of mine and before I left, she shoved Bleach into my hands(this was around when volume eleven had just come out). I refused it a few times. Even when she convinced me to take it home, I waited for weeks before I even tried to read it. Something about the cover just turned me off the series.

I flipped through the first few volumes, but somewhere around volume five, it just grabbed me. I couldn't put it down. I think I skipped eating for almost a day because it just held me totally in its thrall.

But, I think a lot of people have the same problem with it. I have to basically shove the series into the hands of even my most avid manga-reading friends.

Prince of Tennis was also a problem title for me. I read a scanlation chapter years ago when it first started running in Jump and couldn't stand it. Ryoma's attitude just irritated me to no end. He was the first character that I absolutely couldn't stand.

I refused to get into it for years, even if most of my friends were fairly avid followers of the series. It wasn't until I was bored and in need of some cheap manga to tide me over until another release came out that I decided to pick up a copy of Viz's English release of volume one. Something clicked and I was back the next day to buy the rest of the English release.

From the few anime episode I seen of Getbacker, it follow a basic formula. Someone loses something dear to them, tell a sob story, the getbackers get back their stuff for a price but always end up broke. I heard there was a more stable story later on. As for kare kano, I never really like it, I have the anime complete collection but the character was annoying. I recommend Flowers and Bees instead.

Yeah, I've been hearing plenty about Bleach these days, and since I'm a shonen fan everyone recommends it to me. Just what makes Bleach so wonderful, exactly? The characters, the storyline, the art? Ever since it became so popular I've been very curious, because on the surface it seems to me like a Yuyu Hakusho/Shaman King imitation with the afterlife and ghost themes. I'm collecting too many series as it is (16) but since it's the equilvalent of Naruto (of which I am a die-hard fan) in manga popularity I might try it...

How is Kare Kano related in any way to Flowers and Bees? There's a big diffrence between slice-of-life and black comedy. But KK does improve, in art and storytelling. I very much enjoyed the comedy initially, but the serious turn and great characters later on really makes it one of the best shojo stories available in english. As for Getbackers, pretty standard: if you like guys with a slightly homoerotic relationship beating the crap out of baddies, you'll dig it. It was just too inconsistant for me.
I've had a change of heart on a couple diffrent series that have taken time to grow on me (Jiraishin, Hot Gimmick, Berserk), though it's much more common for a series to take a nose dive. One thing that I only started getting into months after reading the first chapter is Arigatou. Not that the first chapter was bad, but I just got the impression that it was a simple ero-comedy, as the sex was graphic even by Naoki Yamamoto standards (which is saying alot). What it lacks is the rest of the stories scathingly satirical humor and deep character interactions. Really great series, just an extreme first chapter.
While it really doesn't count, I only started enjoying Eyeshield 21 after reading it for the second time. I don't really know why either; it's my favorite shonen series right now. Must have been in a bad mood.

Well I'm with you as Bleach is pretty average to me, I can see why Bleach is extremely popuar, just check out all the bleach cosplayer at the Jump festa 2004, and I heard it get really good later on so I'm hoping it does.

Not related at all, just that one story stand above the other in my opinion. I couldn't stand kare kano's Yukino in the anime. Perhaps I'll have a change of heart on this title, if I read the manga, but the anime was...eh Wink

You really should give it a try. What makes Bleach so popular is its artist, Kubotite. He writes and draws with style and impact. It may not make a lot of sense, but he just injects a freshness into a seemingly old story to the point where it honestly feels completely different from its predecessors.

His grasp of characters makes the series especially enjoyable. Even as the cast has grown absolutely enormous there's hardly a character ignored or concept repeated. And his sense of clothing style is more carefully honed than that of most shoujo artists(I think he was actually voted the most popular in clothing design a few months ago in the Japanese Jump).

Basically, Bleach is a breath of fresh air into the somewhat stagnated medium of shounen action manga, where the out-dated punk styles of yesterday still linger. There's no tournaments, just a steady progression of character. And with Kubotite's sense of humor, character, and mystery, it's really a series that could redefine a genre.

So it's character-driven, stylistic, and written in a way that it makes the standard shonen fare unique? Hmm, yup, that sounds like something I'd like. Smile I've been hungering for [yet] another shonen series lately, and have been tempted by some of the newer ones: HxH, Full Metal Alchemist, ect. I'll add in Bleach to the one's I'm considering. How long is it? The ongoing shonen series have been pushing past thirty volumes lately...

And keeping on topic, another series I love now but wasn't impressed with at first was Cyborg 009. After opening the book, I was kinda jarred by the mickey mouse-ish designs, which undermined the surprsingly dark storyline. But once I got used to it and took the characters seriously, I was completely absorbed with the classic.

It's up to volume seventeen in Japan, but stateside volume seven just came out(And Viz's translation has been pretty nice). It's still going pretty strong in Japan, so it might not end anytime soon(there's a lot of debate if he'll end it after the current arc is over, but its current popularity might not allow for it to end just yet).

But, yeah, there's been a lot of pretty good shounen titles out. HxH isn't quite as good as YYH was, but Full Metal Alchemist's manga has been pretty good(I was surprised as I had heard some iffy things as to the pacing of the story). Another good shounen title is Eyeshield 21, if you haven't picked it up yet. It's probably one of the funniest sports manga I've ever read and the only manga on American football I've ever gotten my hands on.

At first I didn't like Angel Sanctuary. I began reading further and it captured my interest. Likewise for Fullmetal Panic.

I bought the first volume of Fullmoon Wo Sagashite without even reading the synopsis on the back... Rolling Eyes
And then when I started reading I thought it was total crap and just another "I want to be a famous singer story" (which I hate).
Fortunately I read on! Later it gets really interesting and different than I expected it to be after the first few pages! I've already bought volume 2! Very Happy

I first bought a volume of Lupin III - World's Most wanted and I really liked the humour an light-heartedness (is that a word?) of it, so I decided to buy a volume of the original series Lupin III. It's not that it was a bad volume, but it was a big darker compared to - World's Most Wanted, which kind of caught me off guard, and I wasn't at all too enthousiastic about it.
The art and way of storytelling takes a litle to get used to, but I love it now, and now that I've read more of the series, I'm a Lupin addict Very Happy

Bleach really turned me off when I first read the preview in Jump. It basically seemed like any number of other destroy the monster of the week series. Luckily I went back to it. Simply put, the series maintains that bad-guy-of-the-week thing for a while, but it throws out a few genuine surprises and then just completely spins off in another direction - a much more interesting direction - so IMO it is worth investing in.

Hikaru no Go had me rolling my eyes at the concept of a series about Go. But now it is one of my all time favorites! The series is not really about Go and you definitely don't need to understand the game to appreciate the series. It is basically just a really good coming of age story.

Berserk threw me off because I simply hated the art style - too gritty for my tastes. But my friend really loved the series, and I eventually got into the story. BTW I think the artists style definitely has gotten a lot sharper - although the story lately.....

Blade of Immortal. At first I thought it would be a typical samurai story, like Lone Wolf and Cub (which in my opinion is not that great, the story kinda drags) After reading some reviews on the net, I decided to give BoI a go. Hot damn, How could I be so wrong!!! Very Happy Blade of the Immortal is definitely one of the best manga out there.
