... which is in contradiction to your previous statement. If it's so easy to write crappy big hits, then why are there only a handful that make it (that is, quickly recoup their investment)? |
It contradicts nothing. Those poor sellers still sell; someone out there is still buying them.
Changing the subject somewhat, Chihayafuru (which is a great show) got a second season despite the first season selling two thousand copies per volume or so, which is absolutely bad and well below the level of profitability. Keep in mind that Anime is mostly created to boost sales of Manga, Light Novels and games. Then there's merchandise. Now it's true that only a few shows manage to outright make a profit just from home video sales, but many of the works which don't still eventually end up turning an overall profit. Hollywood is the same. Waterworld, one of the most expensive and infamous flops in Hollywood history, did manage to turn a profit more than fifteen years on. I think Justin Sevakis mentioned that it can take years for a typical Anime series to be profitable due to merchandise et cetera.
Just because profitability takes a while on the Anime side of things doesn't mean that the storylines weren't incredibly easy to write up. The only smart thing that this Yumizuru fellow did was mix Mecha with Harem, thereby gaining both fanbases. But each and every individual element to the story and character's personalities are by-the-book and lacks any creativity whatsoever. |
And maybe JUST MAYBE that's why some of us like it. I mean i can enjoy dark and serious(hell Bokurano is still one of my favorite series) but it IS nice to have a series so cliched and full of stupid stuff that it's just relaxing. I for one term such shows Bon Bon series. Basically their feel good and not much else. Things like that can be VERY nice to have when tired/stressed out especially if near your limit.

I'm going to ask this once and only once:
Why bother posting in a thread for someone who you CLEARLY hate?
Serious question.
Because wishing death upon someone, even if it is a joke, is not funny.
Grow up.

Replying to earlier comments about my statements:
I was speaking about writing LNs that sell, I never said anything about anime.
Configspace: RE: Japanese mental health/otaku
I wasn't saying you are mentally ill for liking a show. I'm saying that the Japanese otaku fanbase has a very large proportion of people that have separated themselves entirely from the real world. I'm sure you've seen plenty of pictures of some of the crazy stuff they do. And with the internet, this has caused the "Tail to Wag the Dog" in the last 10 years.
It's resulted in lots of stories development being figuratively castrated. They don't want to "upset" anyone, so they won't definitively pick a girl, or have them dating, or even come up with a conclusive ending. All for fear of fanbase backlash.
And with the serial nature of manga especially, they feel beholden to caving into these demands, instead of having the courage to write the story they want. Not that I can totally blame them when it's their paycheck on the line...

If they really cared about their paycheck that much, how can they be trusted to write a good story?

Be careful; I think somebody already mentioned Twilight fans just for that.

That's open for different interpretations per say chagen. Two people in this thread really don't like the franchise so I don't see a point in thread on a series you hate, you don't see me posting in kiss x sis threads do you??
To answer your question well that depends really I like the idea of IS but it's not executed properly on some levels. How many of us here have actually read his book or the source material at hand LEGALLY, instead of judging something series based off source material which is always cut down or changed to sell.
That's all I'm going to say go read the damn book for your-self then make a judgment if the franchise as a whole is shi* if you can't read moon runes then stop complaining about something that isn't meant for our market.

I posted in this thread precisely because I hate the dude and Infinite Stratos. If you have the right to be happy that he is writing more novels then I have the right to be annoyed about the new announcement. If you have the right to post in this thread about how happy you are then I have the right to post in this thread about how disappointed I am. Just because I hold a different view than you doesn't mean I am somehow barred from posting here. This is not a treehouse or secret base where only your friends are allowed in, this is a public forum.
As for wishing people hurt or dead (even as a joke), people do that all the time. As I said before, it is natural to want misfortune to befall someone you don't like. I'll admit it was crass humour to come up with that headline, but the underlying sentiment of misfortune was entirely serious.

Not "meant for our market", huh. True, but it still affects us. If Japanese Otaku refrained from buying crap like Infinite Stratos and instead bought titles that are actually good then the overall quality of Anime would increase and we Westerners would have better shows to watch. So it does affect us, and therefore I do have a right to be annoyed that the Infinite Stratos Light Novel series is getting more books? Instead, why not give a chance to a bright up-and-coming novelist with big fresh ideas, or an established author who can actually write characters properly? Or a guy who understands physics and robots better than the grade-school experience-level of Yumizuru?

Correction. Infinite Stratos, currently, is not getting more books since there is no publisher right now for it even though he's still writing it. Who knows if more books in the series will be published unless he already secured a publisher.
Also, if I remember correctly, the light novels were doing okay in sales before the anime debuted, but then the whole series just blew up in popularity during the anime airing. I think everyone was surprised at it's sudden popularity.

Indeed, it would be awesome, but why stop there? Why not include the author of OreImo and Yumizuru dead after committing erotic asphyxiation together?

I completely agree with your sentiment. Why can't we see better? Why must a book be so terrible that, taking up someone's challenge, I couldn't even get through the first chapter it was so bad (I read it in the original Japanese to make sure), I only wish there were more Kurimoto's and less Yumizuru's in the world, but hey life certainly isn't fair.

It's thoughts like these that japanese fans see that go well they don't like our work so why should we care. Why should share what we do with the rest of the world when we get praise in our own country??
Logic like this is what keeps visual novel/eroge, light novels and other source material out of hands people here that want it. I understand hate for something but is some-one holding a gun up to your head and forcing your watch, read or worship it?? If not shut the hell up and let people enjoy what they enjoy, this is why I am starting to hate the anime fan-base in general.

Ah yes, that is exactly what native Japanese need more of: isolationism. Well sorry to say, but they are certainly no sacred cows and if something of theirs is written to, as was mentioned earlier, have the tail wag the dog, I think it deserves all the ridicule it gets. Anyway, as for me, they can't hide behind their moonrunes and firewalls.

You people have serious issues, grow up punks. Wishing harm or death to someone just because they wrote something you dislike is completely unnecessary and moronic. You clearly have no appreciation for life. You two need to be banned, permanently, and I'll make sure of it that you two will be.

Yes. This.
I don't like IS, but I don't use it to construct some grand theory on why Japan doesn't live up to my own personal standards, and then wish death on the author.
Its just a really shitty show.
