I've just noticed that most of the popular anime in USA are long series. Most ot my american friends keep telling me that they like Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Bleach and series with more than 50 episodes. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I enjoy those series alot, specially Ranma 1/2, but some of them dont seem to apreciate good, small series like Elfen Lied.

What I'm trying to say is, Why does this happen? Surely this is an interisting phenomenon. Aside the anime shown on TV (like Cn 'n such) Have you seen this or you prefere this kind of series?

Well I see that all the time but, one of the reasons is because it's so long, there are a lot more memories about the show and it normally plays orver a very long period of time which would leave it's mark on your brain if you watch it.

Longer shows mean you get more of your characters. That makes fans happy, if you're a fan of the given show. Plus, from a marketing perspective it's good business. If you've got 2 great shows, both very popular, but you can only show one of tv which do you choose? If they get the same great reviews and attention but one show is say 50 episodes and one is 25 the television channel execs will go with the longer show. It means more money and higher ratings for the channel. That's why a lot of great shows don't make it, among various other reasons. They just wouldn't be on long enough to bring in the ratings shows like Naruto or Dragonball can.

Why? Because you can market/milk it longer, if the series is long then more money can be made. Also, most people who watch anime on US Television are of the younger audience; they like their series long, for pretty obvious reasons.

As to why many prefer longer series to shorter ones, first and foremost it has to do with simply not having to deal with finishing the series, and it always feels good to always be able to expect a next episode, and not have to see an end in sight for a long, long time. Another reason would be the world-building; if you have a very long, 100+ episode series then there is a lot of discussion to be had about it, with a generally HUGE cast of characters, all with most likely adequate character development because of the series' length, numerous subplots, and a whole world which is very difficult to do in a standard length series.

I personally like my series shorter, preferably 24-26 episodes.

I guess that anime's with more episodes appeal to more people because the story gets into more detail [depending on the series] than those that only have 13 episodes or so. Another is that, in some short anime's the ending leaves you hanging and when I say hanging if makes you want more out of it. So some people would much rather have the story develop nice and slow, as the characters develop as well. Well, it really depends on personal taste. If you're the type who likes the story to proceed rapidly then you'd probably prefer shorter anime shows. Although I must admit, sometimes when the anime shows are so so[like 100 episodes] long, people get tired of it [depends on the quality] and ends up wishing for the story to end already. Then later on, its either they gave up on the show or finding themselves unsatisfied with the ending. I don't know I like long and short anime shows,as long as the story is good. Wink

I'm pretty sure longer shows have more success given the fact that you have new shows for every season, and you can put new characters out to make it interesting. Especially when the show is targeted towards a younger audience, you've got to keep it up like that to appeal to each new generation.

When it's fillers, then yeah, you're not missing much. When it's getting to the finale, then you're missing something. Sometimes you can't tell, which is why sometimes you just got to watch everthing.

They are popular because fans of anything are generally nigh on insatiable.
I hear it all the time. "Man, [insert show here] was an awsome series. Too bad it ended, I wish they would make another season."
So if they keep giving them that "another season" then the fans will stick with it.

The downside of course is that it makes it hard for new watchers who think the show looks interesting, but come in on episode 107, to really get into it. Those kinds of shows, you pretty much need to be with it from the begining, or else your hooped, which is why I tend to try and stay with series that have 26 episodes or less. If I see a series has too many episodes, I usually try to avoid it.

Also, I like endings. Really, I do. I like the story to be complete at some point in time. I like being able to look back on the series as a whole, begining, middle, and ending. I always feel so satisfied when I finaly watch the very last episode of a series I loved, and finnaly get to see how everything is resolved. So, yeah, Im not the kind of fan who will always be shouting for "One More Season!", and I try to steer clear of shows with over 50 episodes. (I make a special exception for Digimon and Full Metal Alchemist though ahaha)
