This anime looks pretty cool to me and I've been wanting to buy a new series, but i wanted to know if it had as much good quality action as I've heard it does. Also, do they at least have some character development, i mean, its not just action all the time is it?
And the people who compare it to Bebop, why do they do that? Its just that to me, Bebop is the best and anything that tries to be like Bebop is not going to be good. Thanks. |

Guns, gunfights, bombs, explosions, knives, among other things all packed into a well-animated fast-paced series, that's neither lame nor unrealistic. Yeah, I'd say the action is pretty impressive in this series.
Action definitely takes precedence over character development in the series, but there was enough character development in both seasons (more in the second) to keep me plenty satisfied. It's a good show, and there's more to it than senseless shooting.
Because people like comparing stuff and love pointing out that Series A is "similar" to Series B (I'll admit, I'm guilty of this too every once in a while...).
It's not "trying" to be like Bebop at all. Outside of the basic premise and the fact that storylines go by an arc-by-arc standalone basis, I can barely find any similarity between the two. |

Black Lagoon is definitely a surperb high quality action series yes. Best one to come arround in a long while really. Impressive animation by Madhouse, a ton of likeable characters, very good storylines, and a great rocking soundtrack.
Also the only miniscule way it compares to Bebop is that the Lagoon company takes most any job for cash, however, unlike Cowboy Bebop, they are criminals and work the whole other side of the fence. Smuggling goods, pirating, stealing, kidnapping, bounty hunting, killing, etc. they do anything to make ends meet. You can check out the official site for more info or watch a trailer here. |

I wanted to start a new series too, so I went out and bought the first dvd. I was actually a little disappointed, I found it a little boring. The action is great, but I didn't find much else in the movie with regards to depth or a thought provoking story. With the exception of Revy (who is kick ass!), I find the rest of the characters to be boring... I found it very hard to feel anything towards them at all.
You might want to take my thoughts of the show with a grain of salt though (as with anyone for that matter), for two reasons. Firstly I see you are a big fan of Cowboy Bebop, where I am on the other end of the spectrum... so we obviously have differing views. I think this reminds me a great deal of Cowboy Bebob, but I deffinetally would not say that Black Lagoon is trying to be like Cowboy Bebop in any way shape or form. Secondly, I have only seen the first four episodes... so I am judging the while not seeing the "full picture". I think this series only has one trick up it's sleeve, and thats Revy... maybe someone can convince me that Black Lagoon improves in the later episodes. |

The first few episodes aren't that great. I watched the first 4-5 episodes (up to the first episode of the Neo-Nazi arc) and never finished the first season. But when I read a bit about the first episode of Second Barrage, I watched the first story arc of it, and it was amazing. That was what sold me on the rest of the series. As for the Cowboy Bebop comparison... they are only vaguely similar. They are both about a band of rogues and are somewhat episodic, though Bebop is almost entirely single-episode stories, while Black Lagoon tends to have several episode arcs. |

I wanna watch this one too, since I almost automatically like everything made by Madhouse, but the butch looking girl scares me

<She's supposed to do that.
...and well she is kind of a complete psychopath that enjoys putting bullets through people at any and all oppertunities. Although, Rock is a good influence on her for that considering spoiler[despite how freaking mean she is to him she really seems to like him a lot. Although she'd die before she ever admitted it openly. She does generally seem to enjoy his company after they work out their issues in episode 7.] |

black lagoon took me 2 tries for me to be hooked. i watched the first episode then said its not all that interesting and quit the series for a while. then i kept seeing lil references and some posts here and there about it and said why not give it another shot. i ended up liking the series immensely. season 2 is better in my opinion but they both have their moments. after episode 7 in the first season u see its not all action spoiler[cigerette scene] and is easily one of the coolest anime scenes
the one thing i really like is that shows a glimpse of the darkside of the world, some of the things people go through and the russian mafia. BL discussion thread HERE |

I've only watched the first season so far, but Black Lagoon is definitely one of the better action oriented animes that I've seen. The action is a little over-the-top and unrealistic (Revy jumping from one ship to another), but the stories themselves feel like they could legitimately be true. I wouldn't neccesarily call it 'character development,' but there definitely character tension, which is almost exclusive between Revy and Rock. Maybe there's more character development in the second season. o.0

After watching all 26 episodes of it m opinion is yea, it is good. Good music to fit alot of the sceans in the show. Also, has some very funny parts. Not going to spoil it for you if you decide to watch it, but the ending is top notch.
I thought of it more as a action-comedy mix for the most part, bcause most of the fight sceans, while very well done, had alighter side to them. Don't get me wrong, they also had seriousness in them as well. All-in-all I'd have to say a well made show. Something every action genra fan should watch. "Rock", as is his nick-name in the show, is an awsome chaector. I belve his Japanese VA is the same one that plays Koiucki (sorry if it is miss-spelled) from BECK. All the chaectors in theshow are realy well done, no real complaints on any of them. I will put in this discalaimer: I saw the suded version of the show, so if u plan on watching it dubed I can't realy say much. The animation, while some parts I think it could be done a little better, spoiler[like in the 1st episode where Revy jumps over the bar counter and starts shoot], most of it was very well drawn. The setting for the story couldn't have been more perfect, that comeing together with everything above, made it a soon to be classic in my opinion. On a scale of 1-10, I'd have to give this a definate 10. |
