I think this is a good article but...you really need to credit the source of the images used. I recognize most of them from the official fanart book, but it seems like there's also some internet fanart mixed in and unless you drew it yourself it's really uncool to post other peoples fanart without permission or credit. Confused

I feel this article would feel a lot more professional if the images had sources because it currently just looks like someone's tumblr post.

I'm interested in Lancelot being someone up with a stick and the Noble Phantasm.

F/Z's take on Alexander accentuated all of his positive traits while eliminating all of the negative ones. Yes, he was charismatic, magnanimous, and a tactical genius, but he was also responsible for way more human suffering than even the ultimate creeper Gilles. [...] While the anime makes Alexander's military campaigns look like one giant party, the reality was probably closer to a parade of calculated subjugation. He had to kill and enslave hundreds of thousands of people to do what he did. In Fate/Zero, Alexander's Noble Phantasm is based on the combined powers of everyone who followed him in life, but the historical Alexander wasn't all that popular during his time. [...] Sure, the Romans loved him, but they went on to produce their own set of egotistical murder-dictators. (Julius Caesar, anyone?) Beyond that, Alexander was solely motivated by his own reputation. He just wanted to be like one of his heroes from the Iliad. That's like waiting in the jungle to attack people because you want to be like Rambo.

While F/Z certainly wants to portray team Waver/Rider as the one to root for and, therefore, puts emphasis on charisma instead of subjugation, they do make an effort to get some of the major traits right. Of course you have to be ruthless and hungry for power to conquer huge parts of what was then the known world. But I think the banquet of kings scene and several of his interactions with Waver do give a glimpse of that. F/Z's Alexander doesn't see it as his duty to protect his people or rule fairly and just, but to inspire others to dream through his own grandeur. He's quite honest and straightforward about that (making him so accessible), and he truly does inspire his master/retainer Waver that way. The historical Alexander must have had a similar influence on his followers while he was alive, and it didn't take long for things to fall apart once he was gone. Alexander was curious about the world and very adaptable at incorporating everything at his disposal into his strategies. F/Z has him study modern warfare techniques and geek out about them. He also seems to have been quite the party animal and certainly had the bromance down. All in all, I'd say that, even while glossing over the brutality, he seemed fairly well researched.
I want to attribute these moments to Urobuchi's fascination with human nature (although there's no way for me to know), but when Rider learns about the true dimensions of the (modern) earth and reflects upon how his own conquests seem slightly more insignificant today, I though that was a nice commentary about his obsession with his own aspirations to become like one of his ancient heroes. After all, the question of what it means to be a hero is the major theme of this show.
(Also, no need to rely on anime if you're pressed for time, there are so many great history podcasts out there dealing with Alexander. As Gabriella said, things like Game of Thrones do get their inspiration from somewhere.)

Thank you for these articles, Gabriella, much appreciated, fun to read and informative.

Note to the author:

About Gilgamesh in Fate/Grand Order. First of all it's the Android/iOS game Fate/Grand Order (not the iPhone, it even launched first on android and the iPhone is just one iOS product). Secondly there's only one Gilgamesh in it currently and you can't build a harem since the same servant can only be used once. Every card just has 4 ascensions which most of the time changes clothing and/or form.

If you want a harem, there's currently 3 Cu Chulainn's in the game (stay night, prototype, grand order (as caster))

though you can't necessarily call him the king of kings that considering that he got owned by saber and her Avalon Noble Fantasm in the fate route.

Gil is the King of Heroes not King of Kings. And I think that title is fair considering even though Saber wins in Fate, the blow came from Gil's own sword [being reflected].

and while you do have a point about his own sword being reflected, still doesnt change the fact he finally lost one. and in the fate route he looked kinda glad it was to saber which however is quite different in the UBW route.

THis is what happened in the anime.Avalon and Excalibur CANT be combined OR reflect anything.I

I want an American Grail War

I tried to make a fan-fic of this a long time ago. Here's a list I came up with:

Saber - James Bowie
Lancer - Crazy Horse
Rider - Headless Horseman
Archer - Blackbeard the Pirate
Berserker - Billy the Kid
Caster - Tituba, Black Witch of Salem
Assassin - John Wilkes Booth

I don't remember the details on why I chose some of them.
