For those of you who (like myself) enjoy and appreciate the Dune books by the author Frank Herbert (not including the apocrypha by his B. Herbert and K.J.A.)
I have News for you! Recent hints here and there among fun circles, suggest on board plans for DUNE anime chronicling the life of Muad'dib. We are told that the series would incorporate book 1-3 and 4-6 in two special segments. Koichi Chigira is purportedly going to be involved in the anime (supposedly) as the director. Those of you who have seen the Last Exile would remember him as the directer of that show. Coincidently Dune: anime would also feature a combination of 2-D and 3-D CGI sequences and would run for a 56 episode series. Sources affiliated with Madhouse say the show would be aired around mid December or early February.

I myself consider the orginal novel to be a masterpiece in form and function, and the 84' movie to be visually stunning and rather true to form. Even with its many liberties. I also think the SciFi version bastardized it.
However your two special segments covering 6 (very large complicated) books worry me a bit(a lot). Sounds something like an RG Veda job to me. With all the detail and stimulating designs it would end up a big WTF. On the other hand if they plan to turn this into a series of specials, each focussing on half a book. All the while making it an extremely dark anime and I think we could have a very well, and well accepted adaptation. Even with some liberties. Where did you get this info? |

To be honest, I really wanted to like Dune, but asides from the unique worldbuilding, I had a hard time caring about the characters or what was happening to them. I guess this is one of those sci-fi epics that serve more as a political commentary than an entertaining story in of themselves. Sorry Dune fans, I appreciate the influence it had on sci-fi and literature in general, but that book bored me to tears.

Anyway, I doubt this is more than a rumor, but I think they'd HAVE to take liberties to make an entertaining anime out of Dune. A strict adaption of the book would just be....meh. |

I'll stick with the SciFi version (though I actually have only seen Children of Dune all the way through). I especially don't think telling the later parts would really work at all, since they are really just a mess to understand (I stopped reading after Children of Dune because Herbert just wasn't making as much sense as he did at the beginning).

That was wise of you. I consider myself to be a Dune fan and greatly enjoyed the first three instalments of the series but by the time it got to God Emperor the plot became a rehash of virtually every single event that had taken place thus far. With Heretics the level of redundant-ness became borderline absurd... |

You still haven't provided any reliable source. Furthermore, if you have friends or so working in the industry then it's very unprofessional and unethical (and probably breaking contracts) to leak insider's news this way, if there's any truth within. Your record provides no credibility either. And since when does Koichi Chigira start working for Madhouse instead of Gonzo? |

If you are talking about SciFi's made for TV movies, they are bastardizations anyways. If you are talking about the 84' feature film, no I didn't find it boring at all. About the books, I stopped after the third book and I consider the first novel the real Arc de Triomphe. But I understand why people might not like them. They were never meant to be easy reads, and it is a serious story told in a serious way with virtually no literary fan service. The meat of the story comes from what every facton and person actually does and the reasons why they do it. The setting, as fantastic as it is, is nothing more than a fantastic backdrop. Unfortunately, most of the anime fandom today will only know the story from the most recent of the adaptations, so I can not blame them for the ill opinion. As far as the anime goes, chances are it would turn out just as bad as the recent attempts. It is such a complicated story that when you cut corners people either get confused or they start curdling in the cheese. But I won't go as far as to say it couldn't be done. It would just be really good, or total crap, so to say the least it would be a risky undertaking. To be done right it would need the interrelatedness of Le Chevalier D'Eon, and the styling and dark atmosphere of Ergo Proxy. And of course enough time to tell the story. Tough to be sure, but if done right, and the story told in a proper manner, I don't think it would turn out boring at all. |

It depends on who you ask. I personally never want to see the 84 film today but I enjoyed the SciFi series quite a bit (watching bits of Dune was actually one of my inspirations for reading the books in the first place). I honestly don't see how you can call one a bastardization and not the other, when from what I've seen (which, as I said already, is only all of Children of Dune and bits and pieces of SciFi's Dune), the movie is what I consider farthest from actually telling the story. |
