Episode 3
As usual, the correct solution would be polyamory.

I would love to see Himari flounder after her reaction at the end of episode 3. You don't see too many of these 3-way rom coms where the childhood friend has a complete meltdown. I'm hoping the next episode she doesn't have an emotional reversal and it's back to the same routine. Instead, I'd like to see her get a tad darker and try to get between Yu and Rion and be more forward; spice things up! If I had to bet, I'd see Himari with Yu eventually by the end, they just have great chemistry, it needs to be a seriously bumpy road to that conclusion.

My opinion on Himari will be reserved for how she grows from her current bratty self. Anime often has an issue with idealizing their female characters so I enjoy the shows where the girls are allowed to be a hot mess. I also like that Yu called Himari out on her behavior, because what she's putting him through is frankly quite sh*tty. But it's a lot more interesting to watch people start off sh*tty and improve themselves than have a story where everyone is perfect and lovely toward each other from the start.
...that's if the show is any good. And the jury's still out on that.

Ep 3 production quality dropped significantly even before the usual (now outdated) 3-eps rule,
I hope we won't keep seeing the art goes down too much from this point onwards ;/

Honestly Himari is an interesting character for me.
She's vivacious, sassy, exuberant, and she really livens up every scene she's in.
But she's also the epitome of why every Childhood Friend Losing Heroine loses. She can't be honest with her feelings, ends up helping her love rival in-spite of herself, she takes advantage of the close friendship/history she has with the MC to her advantage, she keeps digging herself into holes until it appears to be too late for her to make her move and even when she does make a move she sabotages herself. But frankly she has no one else to blame but herself.
Meanwhile Rion is also actually a childhood friend of sorts and a contrast to Himari in terms of being one of the few people who can handle her (physically) and is also more normal and honest in terms of her romantic intentions towards Yu. She clearly acts like someone who has feelings towards him and wants to get closer to him without any artifice.
I also think Yu is a pretty solid romcom lead where he clearly has a personality and interests and isn't just a typical self-insert protagonist, and his reactions to Himari and Rion are pretty natural.

Himari and herself sabotage is the most annoying part of the show.

I guess episode 3 was just a bad week, the animation was much better in episode 4. Whoever did the key art for episode 3 had no idea how to draw people to look naturally posed. Probably not the last time we see this.
It's a good thing Himari has an older brother to set her straight, no telling how far she'd let this snowball if not. I guess she would have started with servitude and taken it from there.

It's weird how much the OP advertises Rion as an equal Heroine/rival for Rion but she barely gets any focus in comparison to Himari and Yu and hasn't had any internal monologue. Our only understanding of her feelings are what she's said and how she acts. Even her attempts to woo Yu feel fruitless now that he's sure he's in love with Himari and barely seems to acknowledge Rion exists.
Of course Yu and Himari both sabotage themselves because neither has the guts to 100% confess because of their friendship vow and how they're both nervous wrecks when it comes to their feelings. I admit I find it somewhat entertaining even if it's just an excuse to drag things out and Himari hasn't fixed her toxic behavior yet.
Hibari best character. He's basically as devoted to Yu as his sister but without the teasing and is completely honest. And he's the only one who can properly take Himari to task for her antics.

Imagine asking a girl out in front of your obviously angry girlfriend.

It could be argued that the whole "brother-in-law" thing is a form of teasing, at least that's how Yu certainly sees it, but he's probably entirely serious.

Yu will keep playing her for a while making it seem like she has a chance but we already know Rion has lost

Honestly feels like this episode was meant to catch up Rion to plot relevance and make her feel like a legitimate contender, and more or less I think it succeeded.
At the same time, how do you off-screen one of the Heroines' confession scene? I understand the point is that she keeps confessing no matter how many times she gets rejected, but doing a flashback to the first confession of the show a few episodes after the fact just feels weird for a romance anime. You just don't really do that.
But I think it also gets to why Rion is the perfect foil for Himari. Unlike Himari she's absolutely sure of her feelings, is completely honest with them, and acts on them without any hesitation. Yes, she's down bad for Yu, and doesn't make any apologies or denials about it, unlike Himari who still hasn't confessed and is a hot mess most of the time. Rion even has a plan to win over Himari as her best friend so it's easier for her to be Yu's girlfriend when the time comes.
I'd like to think Himari might finally take her brothers' advice to heart now that her love rival is being more honest..but I kind of doubt it.

I don't know why but I'm having an absolute blast with this show. The dynamic between the leads is just a ton of fun to watch and it's really nice to see the "supporting guy friend" actually have a sizable role too. I know some people aren't clicking with this, but I'm all in.

Her asking "what exactly counts as being dishonest" bit at the end of the episode got a big laugh out of me. It's such a perfect incapsulating of her character.

Summer uniforms! They really do accentuate the natural beauty of a girl.
I guess Yu and Himari are both in a kind of "love is war" type situation of mutually teasing the other to see who breaks first even though they both break pretty easily. Meanwhile poor Rion is just doing her best and being as sincere and earnest in her love as she can be and you just have to respect that.
Gyaru + buff softie is a ship I never knew I needed in my life until now.
I wonder why Makishima is so loyal to Rion. And how much of the conflict at the end was orchestrated by him?
I kind love how Himari gave Yu a lap pillow while still grappling her legs around him like she always does. Is it any wonder everyone assumes these two are a couple?
Yu grappling with how complicated business can be, especially when "Karens" get involved and you sell people stuff on good faith. Love is a beautiful thing but it can still bring out the ugliness in people, ill-befitting his accessories.

| Quote: | | I'm a little confused about the major conflict that appears during the last quarter of the episode. I understand that the girl is lying about being forced to pay more money for the accessory, but how exactly did she prove or convince the school faculty that she was forced to pay a lot of money for an accessory that she requested? It's a very specific thing to accuse someone of, but I'm also not sure how they are going to be able to prove that she's lying. Thematically, I think the episode is strong, and I'm very curious about what will happen next week. |
I assume it is as simple as she complained to her parents who then complained to the school. No convincing or proof is required.

Fun seiyuu facts!
Himari and Hibari were previously Ami and Hayato from The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses! Their dynamic is basically still the same even though they're siblings now!
Rion and Hibari were love interests in Sugar Apple Fairy Tale!
Himari always feels like one step forward, two steps back, when it comes to her character development. And like she's always making everything about her (even if I can understand why she wouldn't accept Yu giving up on their shared dream) and ending her friendship with Yu every 3 episodes. I feel like she's being hard carried by being the Main Heroine.
Meanwhile I find Rion more endearing by the episode. She's not perfect or always sweet, but she's honest and sincere with her feelings and respects how Yu feels and wants to support him. And how can you hate a girl who counts up the amount of times she confesses and gets rejected but still doesn't give up?
I'm really curious what kind of drama Rion's sister Kureha will bring, especially because Makishima is teaming up with her. Is it connected to Hibari? Also, how many baddies can Kaori Nazuka play in one season?
