Gamestop might survive, only from a rebranding and a switch from video games to video game adjacent merch, card games, and Japan pop stuff. They have been gradually shifting in that direction. |

Why would Apple have the Epic store on iphones when Apple already has the App Store on iphones? Because courts told them they had to allow 3rd party store fronts in their ecosystem. |

All I know is I've been buying digital for a long time. I'm more annoyed at console exclusives Star Ocean R was digital only and I bought on PS4 and that's fine but I'd rather have it on PC/Steam since even if Steam delicenses a game you can just pirate it. They only brought the second Star Ocean R to Steam though and the first one is still trapped to consoles. I think that ultimately is what people will have to do though. Buy digitally, then if companies want to play shenanigans with delisting or removing things, just pirate it after. |

Just because the courts sided with Epic in that case doesn’t mean it would work in another case. We’ll also forget that was case was one where no one was on anyone’s side and the consequence of that was Fornite being removed from the Apple Store. So again why would that happen when the Steam Machine exists and when most PC Owners have made it clear they don’t have much an interest even before this news in buying a PlayStation? |

We will not be doing console war investor speak, thank you very much, especially since Microsoft is rumored to be going digital only with their next console (if their gaming division even lasts long enough to release new hardware). And that's before getting into how the Switch 2 and Steam exist for price control.
Exactly, it's all been on purpose and done to try and freeze partners out of revenue share, even if that's basically pennies in the grand scheme of things. It's typical hypercapitalist brain poisoning. The pandemic profits the games industry got definitely caused a spike in that sort of stuff |

Well, it has stopped once before, and the backlash made it so that they not shut down the PS3 and Vita stores. Doubtful it'll happen again. But it seems like its for real this time. As for physical disk production for PS games ending. Yeah, it hurts. Doubtful if even a massive backlash will change their minds reversing it. |

People might have shamed Microsoft back then that even PlayStation made that one video dunking on them but that was 13 years ago and I think this is the age of digital. Nintendo did it, PlayStation is now doing it, Microsoft will probably do it since they already wanted to over a decade ago but gamers weren't ready yet. And with games now costing even more with the $70, $80, and more now. People are saying gaming will price people out but I wonder if that matters if the whales can carry everything.

Microsoft didn't make a video like that Sony tutorial video that's backfiring on them, so dunno why you're inserting them into this. The funny thing is that Sony video is still up on their official Youtube channel - and it's now getting roasted in the comments Also, Steam accepts 3rd-party store keys, unlike Playstation |

I also forgot this effects getting physicals on Amazon and similar sites. A lot of people like to get games there because they frequently will have sales or used games cheaper than the full price versions
Took 7 years for that to happen though. And the issue was that it got delisted at all. My point was that that can happen to basically anything now after this unless it gets a similar situation |

Wasn't only one court case. It isn't even only 1 country that has forced this. The benefit for Steam isn't selling Playstations over Steam Machines. Steam doesn't make anything off the Steam Machines anyway. The point would be having the Steam store available for the 93M PS5s out there as Steam actually makes its money from the software they sell on their store, not the Steam hardware. |

The licensing rights expired . It’s the same reason you see Ninja Turtles games get removed after while from physical and digital storefronts.
How many PlayStation gamers have Steam though? Like I have one as I have a gaming laptop but it wouldn’t make me turn around and download what few games I have in my library on whatever PlayStation system I have. And that’s without getting into how you even play that stuff taking the logistics including updates and patches etc. into account. In addition wouldn’t Sony & Valve also collect a percentage of whatever new games were sold before the publishers got their cut in such a scenario? |

Can't stand sony, but we knew this was eventually coming. All the console makers are going to follow suit. The real question is what decade will it all be digital platforms? Or will Game Subscription Streaming become a thing first?
Honestly, I hope some other companies out there will pick up slack. This will definitely leave a empty hole in the gaming industry. |

This will also mean that a hypothetical PS6 is likely to not have a disk drive and thus not be backwards compatible with the games that I already have, and I definitely don't want to juggle an extra giant box in my TV's limited HDMI ports.
Sony may have coerced me into getting a PS5 with Demon's Souls and it does play most of the PS4 library, but there's been little of interest to me from their releases. I won't say that I won't ever get a PS6, but it's going to be a low priority. |

Don't forget the great news that Sony went back to back with this and announcing they're investing more into AI. Truly, the Simpsons rake meme in corporate form. And sure, they swear it's not gonna displace jobs and just "help creators" but lol I feel like we all know what it's about when a company says they're investing in AI these days.
There is one small chance, supposedly there's a class-action lawsuit (or perhaps several?.. I forget) that argues that without physical releases, Sony's online store would qualify as a monopoly, so antitrust laws could at least do something. Now, they won't in the US because the US is currently a nightmare land that will always side with corporations and monopolies over its people, but there's a chance it could work in Europe. I say that if only because while they didn't exactly stop Microsoft from acquiring Activision Blizzard, they at least did get them to confirm they'd keep putting Call of Duty on Nintendo consoles and PC instead of immediately making it Xbox exclusive.
"No, of course it'll be backwards compatible! You'll just have to buy the games all over again in cloud edition! Or remasters! -Some Sony exec, I'm sure. Honestly I know social media (particularly Twitter) is a nightmare space that I should really stop visiting, but it drives me crazy how many people out there seem perfectly content with this decision, even to the point of mocking people that are negative about the news. Like, I do not like to be all doom-and-gloom-y, but if you don't see the negative repercussions this will have down the line (and not even that far down the line!) you have to be either blind or getting paid by Sony. It's kinda wild how in just a few years we've gone from people giving Nintendo hell for making Mario Kart $80 to Nintendo somehow looking like the "good guys" (comparatively speaking of course, they're still no saints). |

Until the Internet Companies figure out a way of giving good internet access to everybody, the console makers ensure that their consoles can maintain a steady Internet connection, and the video game companies ensure their servers are consistently online this is definitely not happening first |
